Laptop will boot up but only shows color lines/pixels

Dell Latitude D600 will boot up to the desktop(can hear when OS loads)..but screen only shows color lines/pixels. I can still see the cursor but it's a black box in pixels. tried VGA with another monitor, replaced hardrive..still the samething..I'm not sure if it's the LCD or the Graphic Card(which is mounted to the motherboard)...thanks

If you tried another monitor, and you've verified that the other monitor is campatible and functioning, then the problem is most likely the card. However, you might check the pins in the video cable you used on the other monitor. Also, when you used the other monitor, did you use the keyboard controls to direct the video output to the other screen. If you don't know how to do this, you should be able to dicipher the controls by looking at your keyboard for something that looks like a monitor. Each laptop has slightly different controls. Mine is the function key+the F4 key. Typically there's a cycle in this control. e.g. 1st time pressed = both monitors, 2nd time pressed, just other monitor, 3rd time pressed=laptop monitor.

Hope this helps.

If you get the same thing with an externe monitor then your Video card is dead. sometimes it's separate from the motherboard, if it's the case it might cost you 150 USD to replace it (used on ebay). If not sell it for parts...

Dell Latitude D505 half of screen is black with colored vertical lines.

Sounds like you have a section of dead pixels. This can happen if the laptop has been dropped a lot or stepped on or some type of impact on the laptop. This is a hardware issue. You will need to have the screen replaced. In my opinion, by the age of the laptop, its better off getting a new one.

Appear vertical lines on screen

What is happening to your laptop is the power line connecting a row of pixels is failing so only partial colors are showing up causing the vertical lines. Usually screen replacement is the only answer to fix it. You can find replacement on most LCD displays on Ebay.

Do you see the BSOD (Blue screen of death)?

Sometimes when you use the suspend feature, the cache data can cause the problem. If you laptop allows you to have a fresh start, please choose that.

If that doesn't work, you should try booting from a OS CD. The last step would be to determine if either the Hard disk is corrupt or if there's a problem with the RAM. It's usually these devices which can cause a start up problem.

HOW CAN I FIX MY COMPUTER? ITS READING UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME?

You need your Windows XP cd for this fix.

Boot from the Windows XP CD and at the first prompt, press "r" for repair. Press 1 when asked to choose windows installation and then enter the admnistrator password. If you don;t have one, just press "enter" and it should show you "c:\windows>"

At this prompt, type the following

chkdsk /r

THis should take quite sometime but will fix the problem at the end. when you get the c:\windows prompt again, type the word "exit" and your system will reboot and load windows XP normally
