Re: option to set pin and safemode

Ok, a couple of stupid questions here - it sounds like you have posted this before. If so, I did not see the post or responses, so forgive me if I repeat anything. At the bottom of that screen it should say Restore. Does it, and have you pressed this? Also, have you tried resetting the unit either with the reset button or using the master reset? What happened?

TomTom GPS battery discharge when off

With the TomTom GPS units, if you use it infrequently, you may often find the unit has a dead battery when you go to use it.
This is because turning the Tom Tom off normally with the power button doesn't actually turn it off fully, but instead puts it in a standby mode.
Even though the screen is off and it appears to be shut down, it's still using some power to maintain configuration settings.

If you know you won't be using it for a long period of time, you can press the reset button on the bottom of the unit (this can be done while it's off), and it should put it in shutdown mode, where the battery will not be drained so rapidly. If you do this, you can confirm it's in the shutdown mode by tapping the on button. This normally will power up the Tom Tom, but in the shutdown mode, it will not do anything. To wake it up from the shutdown mode, press and hold the power button for a few seconds, at which point it should turn on and greet you with the Tom Tom drums. It takes quite a while to boot up from this mode, which is probably why they defaulted to the suspend mode instead of a true "OFF" state.

For some of the newer units, they've omitted the reset button, so the process is a little different. Instead of pressing the reset button, do the following:
with the unit on, press and hold the power button. The shutdown screen should appear, but continue holding down the power button for another 12 seconds after the screen turns off. Timing is a bit touchy, because if you hold it too long, it'll end up just rebooting, and then you'll have to try again.
If you're successful in the shutdown, you can test it by briefly pressing the power button. It shouldn't turn back on with just a short press. If it comes on with the tap on the power button, you'll have to try again.

This whole process is a bit of a hassle, and extends the turn on time greatly, so you'll want to plan ahead when doing this, and just shut off normally if you expect you'll be using it within a couple days. However, the long boot up is preferable to having a completely dead unit when you need it, especially if you're away from a power plug...

I bought a Garmin 1450 but Ican't seem to register

  • To register your garmin you connect it to your computer with the mini USB cable
  • Go to and select your country from the drop-down list
  • Click on the "myGarmin" tab at the top of the screen
  • Click on "Register your garmin product" at the left side of the screen
  • Click on "Automotive" and follow the prompts.
You'll be asked to create a username and password. Keep them safe as you'll need them anytime you want to update your maps.

If you want to set a PIN number on your satnav which it will look for each time you turn it on;
  • Press TOOLS on the bottom right corner of the screen which shows WHERE TO and VIEW MAP
  • Press SETTINGS
  • Press SECURITY
It will ask you for a 4 digit pin. Also you'll be given the option to set a secure location. Be sure to do so and use a place that you can get to easily and where you have around 20 feet clear space around you. If you forget the PIN number the only way to remove the pin is to go to this secure location. As the GPS is not 100% accurate when you return to this location the satnav may think you're a few feet out and you may need to move around for it to unlock. This is why you need the space around where you set it.

I have a Garmin 396 that I use for aviation navigation. The 396 just suddenly became unable to find the satelites and therefore will not function. I tried to rebook by unplugging the battery for a couple...

I recommend either resetting the device or update the software. You can find software downloDepending on which model of Garmin GPS unit you’re using, thefollowing routine can reset the Garmin device to original factoryloaded settings, or bring up the Maintenance Mode with access to SystemInformation and View Diagnostics screen, where users can see variouslogs, and of course, clear all user data (reset to factory defaults) orclear Waypoints.
In order to reset Garmin device or enter into maintenance mode, perform one of the following procedures:
Power off Garmin unit. Press on continuously the uppertop left corner of screen and then power on the unit by pressing onceon the Power button. You should be prompted to clear all user data, orasked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press“Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost,so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
Hack above works on Garmin Nuvi 660, 680 series.
Turn off Garmin device. Press down on bottom rightcorner of the touchscreen, and then power on the GPS unit. You shouldbe prompted whether do you really want to erase all user data, or askedif do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press“Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost,so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
Trick above works on Garmin nuvi 200, 250, 360 750, 760 series unit.In fact, there is a video demo by user of Garmin Nuvi 360 on how toperform the hidden reset function.

Note: If entering maintenance mode, it’s also possible to perform master reset by selecting clear user data option.
Once the device has been hard reset, user have to perform the set upprocedure again upon start up. Note that erase user data command onlydelete data in the Garmin unit’s memory that isn’taccessible to the user when the unit is connected to computer. Thecommand does not erase .gpi or .gpx files loaded (if your .gpx filescontain any waypoints then they will automatically be imported intoFavorites), nor will delete any MP3 music, JPG photos or any otherfiles that have been stored on the GPS memory card.
Once the Garmin GPS unit is reseted, remember to place the deviceoutside where there is a clear unobstructed view of the sky for 15– 30 minutes in order for it to requires fix to GPS satellites.
Unfortunately, even if you perform master reset on Garmin GPS unit,it does not reset Garmin Lock security feature, which password-protectmost Garmin electronic devices to deter theft. If you forget the PIN orpassword unlock code to unlock the Garmin unit, the best solution is tobring it to Garmin to get unlocked. “Secure Location” doesnot unlock a locked Garmin unit either as it’s only a temporaryfix as when it’s turn on outside the security location, thedevice is locked again.

Unlock code for my garmin nuvi 350

Unfortunately, even if you perform master reset on Garmin GPS unit, it does not reset Garmin Lock security feature, which password-protect most Garmin electronic devices to deter theft. So unfortunately, there is only one option: You have to send your nüvi into the Garmin, who can unlock it. Remember original receipt.

Etrex - can't find satellites anymore. Just stopped one day after downloading Points to my pc

To my knowledge, a reset on a Garmin eTrex would require:
Holding down the PAGE and PAGE UP buttons while simultaneously powering the unit. The Garmin eTrex will enter the service mode/display:
- Bravo Version
- Software Version
- Time
- Internal temperature of unit
- Battery voltage
- External voltage
- Button presses
- Other tech info

You can also perform an LCD display/screen check by pressing the PAGE button 2X.

A firendly word of advice: While entering the service mode is interesting and useful, be careful which buttons you press because it is also possible to rest the unit to factory settings within this mode. Pressing "up"+"enter"+"on/off" keys in service mode will reset the eTrex to factory defaults. All presets and data will be lost.

To exit just turn it off as normal, and then turn it back on as normal. Unless you deliberately reset the GPS, nothing should have changed.

Alternately, you can try: Hold down the find, click-stick, and page buttons. Press the power button, and when the title screen appears, release the buttons. This will clear all memory (you will lose all waypoints, etc. back them up first).
Find button: bottom button on the left
Click stick: the button on the face of the unit
Page: the top button on the right
Power: the bottom button on the right

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Safe mode only prevents you from using the complicated while you're in motion.

Garmin lock prevents people from using it without knowing the 4 digit pin.

If you turn on Garmin Lock while you're at home, it will automatically unlock the unit when you're at home. Otherwise you'll have to remember the 4 digit pin to unlock the unit.

The Safe mode can definitely be disabled when you're on the road. Not so sure about the Garmin Lock since it's supposed to prevent a burglar from using it.

Do the following: 1 - Make sure you have fresh batteries in the unit and turn the unit on. 2 - Check the GPS date and Time. On the Main Menu at the bottom of the screen, you can see a date and time. If the date and time are not current, then the clock is your problem. You will have to wait for the almanac information to be updated. Details are below in a later section. 3 - Make sure your GPS is in the Normal Mode and not a demo mode. Verify other systems settings. Go to the main menu and click on Setup icon. From the Setup screen, access the System screen icon. Verify the following settings: GPS: normal WAAS: Enabled Language: English or your choice. Battery: Set according to your battery types. 4 - Check your GPSs Version Software. Go to the main menu and click on Setup icon. From the Setup screen, access the System screen icon. From the System screen, access the sub-menu icon in the upper right bar. Select "Software Version" from the list. Verify the actual software version for me. The latest version available for the eTrex Legend is version 3.90 dated March 2008. Update the unit using this latest software and using Garmin's Webupdater. If that won't work, use the following download page to access the latest software updates per units. 5 - Resetting your GPS clock and almanac information Next you may need to acclimate your unit to a new date and time (almanac information). If you had your unit off and without batteries for over a month since you last accessed satellites, then your clock and almanac information may be incorrect. Even Garmin acknowledges this problem after software updates and the problem with accessing satellites. They state: "unit data including alamanac information may be incorrect or cleared. Back up all user data before upgrading. After installation is complete, place unit with a clear view of the sky for 15-30 minutes to re-acquire almanac data. " I know of no way to reset the clock using the GPS menus. All I can suggest is that you do the following: A - turn the unit on and wait 5 minutes or so for the "Poor Satellite Reception" screen to appear. See page 7 of the owner's manual. B - Set the "new location" to your area using the map when the "poor satellite reception screen" appears. Be sure to use the "map" option and not the "automatic". C - Set the GPS outside with a clear view of the sky. Check on it every 10 minutes. When the "Poor Satellite Reception" screen appears again, then click on "Restart Search". The "Restart Search" option is used when the date provided in the GPS is not today's date. (See page 7 of the Owner's manual for an example) Legend Owners Manual: D - Once the GPS can track 4 satellites, then the clock should reset and you should be fine. This process could take up to an hour. I have had this problem with my eTrex Vista and eTrex Legend (both backup GPSs) and resolved it by having the clock reset. In fact, I just tried my eTrex Legend today after not using it for many months and storing it without batteries and it had this same problem. I followed the steps above to fix the problem. This took about 35 minutes.
