You have dirt in them by the sound of things. Get some Servisol Video 40 switch cleaner and spray them with it. It's best if you can get at the switches from the inside of the amp. A few presses should see thm back to normal.
You can get the Servisol from Maplin's (UK), Radio Shack (USA), and I have seen it for sale on Amazon.
