The machine worked fine for about 3 or 4 uses. Now the top thread just gets tangled up around the shuttle. I've cleaned/oiled as the manual directs but that did not help.
I'm having the same issue, rethreaded, cleaned oiled etc and still cant get the top thread to not tangle on the shuttle. HelpI'm having the same issue, rethreaded, cleaned oiled etc and still cant get the top thread to not tangle on the shuttle. Help
I have the same problem! I checked the bobbin housing for burrs, cleaned all the parts and no change. I have also had the same problems as other users who reported no tension in the top thread and problems with bunching/ birdnesting. I did notice some improvement with the bobbin issues (but not tension) if I stitch really slow, which makes me wonder if it's a timing issue. Any suggestions??I have the same problem! I got my machine at Walmart on 4/4/07. I don't use it real often, maybe 10 times since I bought it. I noticed now it is making a clunking noise when I use it, and thread gets caught in what I'm sewing. I have to pull the material out most of the time ripping it. I am not happy about an almost $100.00 machine breaking without that much use on it.

Are u talking about 3-4 uses from being a new machine or is this a machine you aquired,,,,alot of times the machine can be off timing, if this is not the case always try fully unthreading and rethreading and please use rayon or polyester thread, plus make sure you have the bobbin case in correctly

I'm guessing it is because the tension is not just right, the bobbin might not be the right size, the thread type top and Botton might not be the same, or you just might need put in a new needle the right size.
The top thread is probably breaking due to the bobbin thread tangling. First-off fit a new needle .... do that anyway ! And if you haven't recently cleaned your machine (and you should do it every week as a minimum), clean-out under the stitch plate, remove the hook, clean the hook race and give it a small drop of oil, even if you're using the lightweight plastic hook/shuttle. Check that you have adequate bobbin tension ... when you pull the thread out of the bobbin case there should be a bit of resistance --- technically, this should be set-up using the correct tool and a set of weights, but if there is no, or very little resistance, you need to increase the bobbin tension a little bit at a time using the small screw that holds the tension spring down onto the bobbin case. This is a very fine adjustment, so you may find you only need to turn the screw less than a quarter turn to get it right. Ensure that, when you thread the top thread up, you do-so with the foot lifted so that the thread goes down properly between the top tension discs. If you're still not getting anywhere, check the basic timing/needle depth by looking at some of my other posts on the subject.
Are you absolutley sure you're not getting a problem with stitch formation on, for example, wide zig-zag. Check again, using a different colour top and bottom and make sure that the stitch is being formed properly with only the top colour on top and bottom colour on the bottom. It sounds as though the bottom loop is not being picked-up by the hook properly. Make sure you've thoroughly cleaned-out any fluff under the stitch-plate and remove the hook/shuttle and give the hook race a good clean and give it a single drop of oil, even if you've got the lightweight part-plastic hook/shuttle fitted.
Clean out the bobbin area if there are any thread tangles there.
If the bobbin does not fit snugly into the bobbin case, then get new bobbins. You need class A or 15 and they do not cost very much. Make sure they are plastic and not metal.
Refer to the maintenance section of the manual - see the configuration of the bobbin case and shuttle race? The bobbin case as an extending arm and the race a notch. When inserting the bobbin case into the shuttle, turn the handwheel so the needle is at it's highest position. Then lift the lever on the back of the bobbin case and insert the cast into the shuttle, arm pointing straight up toward the bed of the sewing machine.
Now thread the machine with the presser foot up - always - and see if the tangling stops.
There should be a tension setting for your bobbin thread, as well as your top thread. It sounds to me like your bobbin tension setting is not in sync with your top thread.
most common solution to this is to remove the top thread completely from machine and re thread it with the presser foot UP not down. This will allow the top thread to engage properly in the top tension disc

When you forget to lift the presser foot before threading the machine, the tension control does not open to capture the thread. Then when you begin to sew, the top thread has no tension, and the bobbin thread, which does have tension, pulls the top thread to the bottom in messy loops.
Refer to the maintenance section of the manual for the machine and clean as instructed to make sure the bobbin area and shuttle are free of lint and thread tangles.
Re-thread the machine with the presser foot up and see if this doesn't stop the problem.
Check to see if the lower thread be tangled. Also, the bobbin could be threaded improperly in the shuttle hook. Rethread the bobbin in the shuttle hook.
How to detangle a thread---
When a machine stops operation due to tangled thread, do not turn the pulley by force. If the pulley is turned by force then, lower thread might not be picked up correctly and stitches might not be formed correctly.
If threads get tangled, remove a needle plate and cut the tangled threads by scissors or cutter.
Do rate the solution if you find it helpful & useful.
To address my needle thread tangling (horribly) in the bobbin compartment, I rethreaded the bobbin. I cleaned the bobbin and the feeder feet, I changed the bobbin and the thread. I changed the tension on the needle thread and the bobbin thread. NO FIX! Then, I changed the needle - the problem was fixed instantly. I sewed awhile and then put the original needle back in. No problem. I think perhaps that the problem is being caused by the needle getting out of alignment somehow during sewing. If you are having the same issue, try it. It can't hurt!
Either the thread is not in the take up lever or it is not in the tension. Rethread the machine. Raise the presser foot and pull on the thread between the tension and take up. It should be loose. Lower the presser foot, pull on the thread between the tension and take up lever. It should be tighter. Make sure the thread is in the slot of the take up lever and pulled to the front of the lever.
