Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

I have a backward compatable PS3 and I can't remove one screw

First the ps3 just cut off one day on it's own, a few days later I attempted to turn it on an the green light came on and turned to a red flashing light. Now, I'm attempting to open it so I can see if it's just dust or if it need a new hard drive/OS. How can I remove this one screw that's giving me so much trouble?

You most likely have the YLOD(yellow light of death). If you turn on your ps3 and the light goes green for a sec. then flash yellow then blink red, you have the YLOD. You can got to the playstation websit and see what all the colors mean but long story short the YLOD means you have a internal problem and red means overheating. The early ps3's like the one you have, have that designer flaw in the cooling system. You'll most likely have to call sony and get them to fix it for $150(unless you can find someone for cheaper beacause that's what I did).

Well if you pay the $150, sony would pay for shipping there and back.Once they recieve it they will send you a referbished console. It would take two to three weeks to recieve the ps3. But in many areas there are locals who can fix it for much cheaper.(the actual most common problem is when the mother board gets seperated from the two processors). and there are newer consoles that are bigger for $299.00.(but have different abilities)

It's up to how much you are willing to pay to have a ps3.

And no taking out the hdd most likely will not help or cleaning out the dust.

I thought playstations are all formated to play any made of equal or lesser p.s. value such as p.s.3. should play p.s.2. games

I believe you're asking about backwards compatibility. While I agree a PS3 should be able to play PS2 games, it's sadly not always the case. While they all can play PS1 games, not every PS3 can play PS2 games. PS2 compatibility depends on the model.

Backwards compatibility with PS2 games has slowly been phased out. The original PS3's had hardware emulation (quite literally there is a PS2 inside of your PS3). The later revisions had software emulation only (PS3 processor pretends to be the PS2 processor), and then none at all. No slim PS3 has backwards compatibility.

Hardware emulation:
20 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHB01
60 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHA01

Software emulation:
80 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHE01

In my personal experience, there's no real difference between software and hardware emulation in terms of actual game play. Software emulation has a few hang-ups on some older games, but overall it works pretty well. And it's infinitely better than not having any ability to play PS2 games at all.

Why is my ps3 turning on and then having a orange light flash one second later and then shuting off

Does the lights blink red? If so, You have the infamous YLOD, aka. Yellow Light of Death. This is the number 1 cause of pS3's dying. It is an overheating issue linked to your CPU and GPU (the processor chips) You will need to find a local PS3 repair shop who can repair this. Do not try to attempt repairs seen on the internet yourself as some would suggest. You could make things much worse and render the unit totally unresponsive. The repair process takes about 3 hours.

IT CAN BE FIXED

IS THERE A DISC STUCK INSIDE?

If you have a unit that is not backwards compatible, any non 60g or 80g then you can retrieve your disc.

Power off the unit using the toggle switch on the back. Hold down the 'eject' button and turn the toggle switch back from off to on. This will run a fan test and eject your disc. Remember, this will only work on the 20, 40g models. Not the backwards compatible units with the 4 usb port holes and the memory card slots.

Can ps2 games be played on a ps3 and if yes how

Hi, the only ps3 that can play ps2 games is the 40gig one this is the only one they made that was backwards compatible you could also play ps1 games on this ps3, how ever they are hard to come by now and the only real place you can get one from is the well know auction site.
The other thing you could try would be to go into your nearest game shop and ask them if they can get a backwards compatible ps3 they are out their but are hard to come buy new.

their is also ways of changing the firmware on your ps3 to accept the old games how ever doing this is illegal and i cant give you any advice on this as its banned by the site, how ever if you use google and type in how do i make my ps3 backwards compatible this will then list loads of sites that can offer the help your looking for

Is there anyway of getting older version of ps3 os that is backwards compatible

If I understand your request, backwards compatibility can not be achieved by installing a different version of the PS3 OS.
You have to buy a 20GB, 60GB or 80GB model that supports backward compatibility.
A quick search of Google Products turns up a bunch of backward compatible PS3s for sale.

Does ratchet and clank (number1) work on ps3?

Not unless you have an early model PS3 that was backwards compatible. The newer versions of the Ps3 do not have backwards compatibility. Sorry.

How do i get ps2 games to play on my ps3

The only way how to play PS2 games on PS3 is to have the correct version of the console. Either your Playstation 3 can play PS and PS2 games or it can't, and there's not much to do about it. Most of the PS3 models simply cannot play older titles as they lack the necessary hardware and firmware. However, a few models do have backwards compatibility. The 20 Gb, 60 Gb, and original 80 Gb models all have backwards compatibility, either through hardware or software emulation. The other models lack backwards compatibility, so even knowing how to play PS2 games on PS3 won't help you out much here.
