Connecting laptop/computer to wireless router If you have a wireless router and it is connected to the DSLor cable modem and Internet then -To connect to your wireless router, the router needsits wireless settings to be configured with the SSID, encryption key etc., alsothe wireless cards and wireless adapters in all the laptops/computers needs tobe configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router and access the Internet via the DSLor cable modem.
Your internet provider should have provided you with a modem (dsl modem) that will have a ethernet port which can be connected to a computer directly or a router to make internet available to multiple computers. Router usually comes with five ports one of them is WAN port (Wide Area Network) and other four are LAN ports (Local Area Network) The dsl modem should be connected to WAN port of your router and the LAN ports are use to connect to any computer with an ethernet cable. If the router has wireless capability you can use your laptop or smartphone to access internet wirelessly!
If you are using an USB cord, then you probably are using a modem rather than a router.
One of the differences between a modem and a router, is that with a modem you can connect to the WAN network only one machine , while a router will assign IPs to multiple machines, connecting them directly to Internet service.
All you need is a wireless router like this. To configure the router you will need to enter the parameters provided by your Internet Service Provider company.
If you have lost the parameters, when you set the router you can call your Internet Provider to be guided step by step in setting the router.
The router can be purchased directly from your Internet Provider.
how about to reset your router and setup it the proper address by your internet provider.. laptops only connect to the router automatically if you enable it reconnect and detect its network without manually connect internet, this procedure can see in your wireless properties by enabling it. And also ask your internet provider if theres a problem also with their internet connection. Good luck!
It sounds as though you will need to get router to allow the sharing of the Internet between the two computers. Using a router makes it much easier to share an Internet connection between multiple computers. You would connect the Embarq box to the router on the WAN port, and then connect your computers to the LAN ports of the router. You may also want to get a wireless router in the event your laptop has a Wi-Fi connection.
You should only need one wireless router for everything. The purpose of the router is to "route" multiple devices together. Your set-up should be something like this:
Modem connected to wireless router via Ethernet cable.
Wireless router broadcasting wireless internet connection.
Computer(s) connected to wireless router via cable or wireless adapter.
Computer with network printer sharing enabled.
Turn on wireless printer.
You should be able to detect the printer via Windows.
type into IE your routers web address 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1, i forget which yours is; then you will be prompted for a username and password, the username is usually blank and the password is admin, unless you have changed it.
When in the settings look for DHCP and make sure it is enabled to automatically assign ip addreses to all pc and check that all the pc's are set to obtain an ip address automatically
I assume your router has wireless enabled .You need to set DHCP on your router and adjust any firewall setting you might have. Also enabled Network address translation to allow multiple routers to connect to the internet. In this case the number of PC that you can connect is way above home office requirement.
If your router doesn't have wireless capability, you connectivity will be limited to physical connection. In which case you need to set above and have multiple pysical connection.
