My laptop has not been dropped or bumped- when I power it on while it is running off the battery it sounds like its trying to read from the cd drive but it just keeps rebooting - when its plugged into a power source it pulls up a screen advising to start in safe mode. Any ideas?

Try taking the memory out and then put it back in making sure it seated correctly then start using AC power lead it's probably caused by letting the battery get too low before recharging.Use a start up disc to get it going if you have to. Good luck
OK people, I have this old acer 290 the battery refuses to charge so I use the power adapter but when I swith it on it may quickly flash on and then hang, turns completely off dead as a door nail. this happened all the time untill one day I left the battery out of it plugged the power adapter in and the problem dissapeared. I have not yet replaced the battery so dont know if a new battery will solve the problem when reinstalled?
Sounds like the power socket on the laptop may have broken loose from the board. Very common.
If you have a multimeter, try and check the voltage ont the tines where the main battery receives it's charge, with the ac adapter connected to the laptop. That will tell a lot.
