If I am right, this is an expensive problem.
The minute pixels that make up the display are turned off and on by circuits arranged in an X-Y matrix. To avoid using one circuit to control each pixel, the circuits are rapidly scanned at a rate higher than the eye can detect.
One or more of the circuits that do the scanning have failed on your set and the ugly part is, the display panels often have these mounted on the display itself forming a 'package' that speeds assembly and are made only by a few companies. If yours is one of these, the entire panel would have to be replaced since the integrated circuits used are very small and have pin spacings that pretty much preclude replacement by hand since they were originally placed by robots.
I hope for your sake the display panel and its control circuits are separate and the panel is still fine since the cost of an integrated replacement may prove to be about 1/2 to 3/4 of the cost of a new set.

Why are there black vertical lines on the right half of the picture?

Vertical lines indicate a bad screen not the T con board. Only fix is to replace the screen.

This problems are a very tipical of the coded pixels on the LCD screen panel passes through the board that call the T-CON decoder board to causing this problems.Vertical colors lines display on the LCD screen panel happen by itself.Yes.The T-CON decodering board it is dying and shorting out. This T-CON decodering board sit in the middle at the botton of the LCD screen panel.Replacing this T-CON decodering board will solved this problems,if does not the LCD screen panel itself it is shorting out, than the tv it is not worth fixing, because changing the whole LCD screen panel itself it is not practical and the cost will be the same as a new tv itself.Tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a refurbish T-CON decodering board for the replacement.

I had the same issue. I could get the tv to work intermittantly by pressing on the boards while playing. This points to bad solder joint, so I resoldered every molex plug connector, and it nows works like a charm.

4.14.1 Understanding Viewing Features
Your LCD HDTV features four viewing modes and Picture-In-Picture (PIP)/Picture-by-Picture (POP) mode.
You can switch viewing modes using the remote control.
4.14.2 Viewing Modes
Normal Mode
The original 4:3 aspect ratio (1.33:1 source) is preserved, so black bars are
added to the left and right of the display image. Standard TV broadcasts are
displayed with a 4:3 Aspect Ratio. Movies in 4:3 Aspect Ratio may be referred
to as pan-and-scan or full frame. These movies were originally filmed in 16:9
(widescreen), and then modified to fit a traditional TV screen (4:3).
Wide Mode
When watching a standard broadcast or full-frame movie in this mode,
the display image is stretched proportionately to fill the TV screen.
When watching a widescreen (1.78:1 source) program or movie, the
display image fills the TV screen. If you are watching a widescreen
(1.85:1 or 2.35:1 source) program or movie, there will still be black
bars at the top and bottom.
Zoom Mode
When watching a widescreen (1.78:1, 1.85:1, or 2.35:1 source)
program or movie, the display image is zoomed proportionally to fill the
width of the screen. The top and bottom are cut off to remove most of
the source material’s black bars. This mode is good for programs or
movies with sub-titles.
Panoramic Mode
When watching a standard broadcast or full frame movie in this mode,
the 4:3 Aspect Ratio (1.33:1 source) display image is stretched
horizontally on the left and right sides to fill the TV screen. The center
of the image is not stretched.

Note: Viewing modes are saved based on input. For example, you lasted watched a DVD in widescreen
mode and then watched TV in standard mode. When you switch back to DVD input, the viewing mode
will return to widescreen.
