I have the same problem. I put in new batteries around 6 in the afternoon and used it for about half an hour, and then when I turned it on the next day it said it had low batteries.

I know that being in very cold temperatures shortens battery life significantly. Does it take a toll on your batteries if you change from super macro to regular lens a lot?

My S3 IS used to have great battery life. Hadn't used it for about a month, and today it was going through batteries in less than 1/2 an hour. Went through three sets of freshly recharged batteries from two different brands.

had the very same problem. Returned it to CANON through the store I purchased it from. CANON said it was a problem with the shutter circuit and the cost to repair was going to be around $200.00!! I was and am not impressed. CANON would not deal with me direct unless I ship the camera direct to them. The retailer told me that I shouldn't pay to fix it and get a new camera. The camera cost me $600.00 and almost to the day the warranty expired, the batteries started draining! I will get a new camera and it won't be a CANON AND I will also return the camera direct to CANON telling them to fix it at no charge or replace. That way, at least, I'll have something I can sell.

Unfortunately this camera is very bad for battery life because the zoom lens itself takes up alot of power. I would have the same problem with putting fresh batteries in and they would only last a couple of minutes.
I went to Blacks and asked their opinion and they suggested a Lithium Ion battery which came with the charger.
The charge only takes 30 minutes and I have been using my camera all week and the batteries are still going strong!
The price for the pack and charger together was a about $29 and it was totally worth the money

Camera beeps but won't turn on

You are sure the battery is still ok?
Please don't try to switch on the camera as long as it is connected to a power supply or a computer with the USB cable, because it won't switch on that way. Only with a correctly charged battery.
Read other post of me to find out what to do with your battery, or just ask if you can't go on.

My camera seems to be drawing energy from the batteries even when it is off because when I put brand new betteries in, within 72 hours they appear dead. I have the Canon SX10 IS. The camera is 10 months...

I have had the same issue. However, it is not draining the batteries, it is telling you the batteries are low even though they are not.
Sorry I don't have an answer though. I have checked batteries after the camera told me they were low/unusable and found them to be fine.

My lcd screen is blank but the camera acts like it is taking a picture. Cannon PowerShot S3 IS

Had the same problem with my S3 is and couldnt find any help other than to junk it and buy another camera. WAY too expensive to repair (out of warranty)
I found a post and this worked for me...just fixed it about an hour ago. Mine would show a blank screen on the LCD nothing thru the view finder other than the menu screen. Found out the shutter was stuck and that seems to be a common issue with these cameras. This is how I fixed mine.
1. set the shutter speed to the longest setting you can. I put mine on the TV setting.

2. close the flash and set turn off all of the functions you can to conserve the batteries.

3. take a picture and within 5 seconds open the battery door. Then close it back and repeat. Your trying to interrupt the shutter reset process thereby "unsticking" the stuck shutter.

4. If this fails then try LIGHTLY tapping the camera against a piece of wood, again to unstick the shutter.

Sounds like a bad idea but considering I had tossed my camera in a drawer and already replaced it, I didnt really have much to lose. I was pleasantly suprised to see that after about 15 resets (steps 1-3) and a couple of light taps, the camera is working good as new again.

Good luck, hope it works out for you!

S3 is issue

E18 is a lens error that needs to be serviced by Canon technicians. You may qualify to replace your S3 for a flat rate or to repair, but it is nothing that you can fix at home.

As for the batteries, what brand? If they are rechargable, make sure they haven't been drained-try them in another device perhaps. I drained mine by leaving them on the charger too long and I had the same issue. Try another set of batteries and clean the battery contacts inside the camera with a pencil eraser to get rid of any residue or oxidation that may have taken place.

If none of this helps, call Canon for service or other option to upgrade for a deep discounted rate. Sometimes it's cheaper than to fix it if you are out of your one year manufacturer's warranty.

Hope this helps!

My camera will not turn on

Check to see that you are using the right kind of batteries (NiCad, Lithium, etc) Not just size, but check what knd the camera needs . Some batteries come labeled for 'Photo' or Digital Devices', but are not the right type for your device, so will not work, and will result in odd bhaviors like what you are seeing > not enough of the right juice.
