Question about Sony KP-61V85 61" Rear Projection Television
Is it possible to strip and get behind and give it a good clean with meythlated spirits ,if access can be gained then this and does work beleave me ,done enough on the local bars around here because smoking is still permitted here in spain and the nicotine build up really dims the pictures.although now they have changed to flat screens because they need less space.

It's better to leave it unplugged.
Just an additional comment, If after cleaning the image doesn't get bright, the projection lamps may need to be replaced but it will be quite expensive. I'm quite surprised how long lasted this TV, unfortunately, because the age, it may not be worth of repairs.

If the set has not been serviced for several years I would suggest two things.
First: the set has (if you unplug the set and remove the back cover) three large black lens in the middle at the top---they are for the three picture tubes it uses; if the picture has been getting gradually darker they may be dirty with dust---wipe them clean with a lens cloth OR spray regular glass cleaner on a paper towel and clean them good--they are glass and the windex will not hurt them.
Second: plug the set back in and examine the picture--if it is now much brighter you are done.
Third: The set also has a large mirror inside in the top back area--with the set off and unplugged you should have more than enough room to stick your head in and look at it from the back--you are looking to see it is clean and not grimy looking--dust rarely sticks to it because it is at a sharp angle but it can become from moisture in the air and dust grimy--a flashlight will show this.
Getting at the mirror to clean it can only be done in two ways---some models you can remove the entire rear shroud it is mounted in and clean the mirror and put the entire unit back----others the only way to get at it is to remove the entire front of the set with the entire screen unit complete---usually a two person job and you have to remove screws from the back all the way around---avoid trying this unless you have to.
Understand: if the lens are even mildly dusty(you can see by running your finger across them to see if it leaves a mark in the dust) the picture will be darker and somewhat dull looking---they are the light source for the picture coming from each of the tubes. Picture comes from the tubes through the lens and is directed into the mirror which directs it onto the screen.
Let me know if you have questions---I am in the USA--not like someone else we both know.

Did it progressively get dim? You may want to clean the mirror and the guns dust etc can cause this. It could be something more serious as well. Have you considered having a professional look at it?

Change coolant fuild in all 3 tubes if you can look down into top of tubes Fuild by now is no Good you proably cannot see picture clearly in any of them and I really dont think there are any tubes avaiable ,But if any of them are you maybe looking at $400.00 per Tube? Or more! On this model I think the Focus/screen drive control Block is in back of Tv mounted above chassis it will have 3 controls on top for your focus to each Tube R/G/B and 3 under them for screen drive to each tube these controls are to turn drives up to brighten tubes R/G/B if you can and in order to try to get correct color you will have to go to menu turn color off yhen adjust screen drives RED Green & Blue to where you have a black and white Picture get as close as you can Then turn your color back on.Give me your Model number its on back of TV will do some checking to see if anyone has any rebuilt Tubes and how much?
