Pentax Optio M20: won't work.

Hi. I have a Pentax Optio M20 Digital Camera. When I hit the on/off button, the camera turns on, the lens zooms out for a second and then back in, then it shows the "Pentax Optio M" load screen, then it shows "Auto Picture" in the center and a green dot in the bottom left with the words "EV Compensation" next to the dot. While it's showing this last screen, it beeps 3 times right before the lens zooms out again then back in just before the camera turns off. I have changed the batteries multiple times. So it's not the batteries. I connected it to the computer and then hit the on/off button. It beeps twice before the red LED light in the front of the camera lights up while the removable disk window pops up on my computer, showing 2 folders ("DCIM", and "FRAME"). I click on these folders and there's nothing in them. I hit the "on/off" button on the camera again and it turns off while the removable disk window on my computer goes away. None of the other buttons on the camera seemed to do anything whether connected to the computer or not, during every phase of it's on status. What can be done to resolve this? Thank you.

When I turn my camera on, it makes a beeping tone and the lens extends and the screen turns on, all normal; however, once the lens is fully extended, the camera then makes a buzzing sound which is not normal. It then goes into shutdown mode, making a normal beeping sound as the lens detracts and the screen shuts off, and a second buzz occurs, which is not a part of the normal shutdown sequence. The whole process takes about 5 seconds, from the time I push the on button, until the camera has returned to the off setting.

I tried the suggestion of turning the camera on while holding the "play" button, and this worked to turn the camera on in display only mode, so I could see pictures, but it will not switch to camera mode. I held the "play" button down for up to 30 seconds, and tried to repeated push the "play" button, but the camera remained in display only mode.

When the camera is turned on, the lens extends, makes a slight buzzing sound and then retracts and the camera turns off.

you have a timing problem, the gears for your housing is out of calibration with your focus lens inside of the housing. you must take the camera apart to correct the problem.there is a flywheel type of ajustment in the top of the camera that can be turned to bring the camera back to its reset position. it is bad to keep turning on the camera as this may danage the gear that is out of time.

Maybe.
But it does seem to be a lens problem. Possibly the lens is out of sync as mentioned in another post here.If there is a grinding, the lens is probably damaged by dirt or sand.
Make sure the batteries or battery is fully charged.

You certainly need to use high capacity Ni-Mah or lithium batteries. Using alkaline would have caused overheating and may therefore have damaged the board. You are right to ask is a repair worth it? Almost certainly the answer is no even if possible. There are usually no spare parts available. Go back to tech support and this time simply report the bare facts -'It wont stay on'. Say nothing about the battery situation. Depending on the age of the device you may be offered a reasonable swap out price.
