The click is not normal. The compressor is not starting and is tripping the overload. There is a chance the start relay on the compressor is shorted, but most likely the compressor will have to be replaced.
Unplug it for several hours until the compressor cools down and then try it again, if it starts up ok when it is cool the compressor is the problem for sure.
If it is less than 5 yrs old the compressor is still covered by warranty and will be replaced free of charge.

SOURCE: maytag refrigerator clicking

it sounds like a bad:

  • ·       start switch (on the side of the compressor) or
  • ·        compressor itself

the start switch clicks  off usually when the compressor is pulling too many amps or the compressor is overheating. if the compressor is not even running then its probably not overheating.
so either the compressor is pulling too many amps (bad compressor) or the start switch is bad and cannot handle the amps required to start the compressor.

SOURCE: maytag msd2756de side-by-side: loud clicking noise from top right of refrigerator

sounds like the adaptive defrost controller part number 61005988. not to bad to repace, the top control panel is removed by pulling down on both rear corners ( youls find little finger holes across the top rear panel to free and pulll foward, the n there are 2 1/4in screws across th efron of control, and 2 phillips head screws jus behind each light bulb, one last 1/4in screw directly on back wall will drop entire panel adn after that youl see the control in the right hand corner unplug the old replug the new . DISCONNECT POWER PRIOR TO REPAIR<

SOURCE: Maytag Performa Bottom Freezer refrigerator making weird noises

This can be due to low supply voltage, causing the compressor thermal overload to trip out. Therefore when this happens the compressor gets hot and it keeps trying to start but fails. It can also be a faulty starter relay, which is located in the conncetion box of the compressor and is very simple to replace.

SOURCE: Maytag refrigerator isn't cooling

Hi ****, Based on the discription you've provided it sounds like either a faulty start relay or the compressor is seized. If you have a multi- meter you can check the compressor to see if the windings are ok. Unplug the fridge. Remove the panel at the back down at the bottom. This should gain you access to the compressor. On the side of the comp. will be the start relay/overload assembly. Pull off the relay & overload and you'll see 3 pins in the form of a triangle. With a meter measure between any 2 pins at one time, going between each pin with one remaining on a "common" pin. You'll want 3 measurement's, similar to this example- 6ohms, 3ohms, and 9ohms. On some meters you may simply get a reading of "0" ohms, as long as the needle moves off of "infinity" which would indicate an "open" winding=not good ! If following that, the readings are good, purchase a hard start kit. Part # HS410 also known as a 3in1 starter kit. This will start it if it's not seized also known as a "locked rotor".. You can find them at most brick & mortar appliance parts locations or on-line vendors. The package contains info on how to connect it. If that doesn't yield any results moving forward, let me know we'll go from there. **I suggest you phone Whirlpool customer support first though ( they own Maytag ) as they recently had a massive recall regarding the starting device of many compressor's and you may find your's to be included therefore have it repaired at no cost.** they will know by your model and serial number or if that isn't clear the number on the compressor. Good Luck Thanks for visiting "fixya", please take a second to rate my solution and leave a comment/testimony to it's helpfulness. macmarkus :)

Replace the overload relays down at the compressor. Easy repair and too expensive. Do this and you'll be good to go.

Fridge working but not cooling.

The white component you see , is the problem . That is the overload/relay . These short due to power surges , dirty coils in the front bottom of refrig , or just by age . They short , to save the compressor , when one of these happens . The part number you need is # 8201786 . This part just prys off (maybe one wire clip ) , easily replaceable with instructions included with the part .

Clicking, buzzing, compressor too hot, thawed out

Sounds like the compressor is in thermal overload. Let it cool down completely and meter the starting amperage on start to run. The compressor could be seized or it's windings could be shorted to ground (checking the resistance between the windings terminals on the compressor while unplugged will determine this.).

My freezer in my side by side Maytag Refridgerator is not keeping food cold -everythings melting -ice in ice maker is melting - motor is running but making periodic clicking sounds.

turn the unit off at the motor/compressor is over heating hence the clicking noise when it cuts out. Defrost it with both doors open for 48 hours. then try it again.

My amana bottom freezer refrigerator is making a periodic clicking sound. Only to find out the items in our freezer have defrosted! Any idea why?

The periodic clicking sound you hear is probably the overload protection device that is on the compressor, what makes this clicking sound is that it is overheating causing the bi-metal to open, now what causes the bi-metal to over heat. check your condenser or condenser fan they should both be clean and operating, make sure your that the back of the refrigerator is at leash 6" away from any wall, if not this will prevent air flow to the condenser which will cause it to overheat.

Maytag refrigerator clicking noise and stopped working

How long a period of time have you noticed this noise? If it just started and the refrigerator just stopped it could have entered its defrost cycle. When the defrost heaters come on you may hear the heat causing some expansion. After a few minutes(18-22) the defrost cycle ends and the refrigerator will restart.

Noisy compressor

If it's a buzzing for a few seconds followed by a click, your probably going to need a compressor. This sounds like that problem. Check your warranty. Many manufacturers went to 1 year on this in '06.
