Question about Brother MFC 420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I have a Brother MFC 420CN printer/copier/fax/scan that I was running on my old Windows 2000 computer. I recently purchased a Dell Studio 64 running Windows 7, and I cannot find a driver for the printer. I downloaded the driver on Brother's website for Vista64 but it would not work, or at least I could not make it work. Is there a Windows7 driver for this printer? Linda

I already tried that. The CD that came with it does not support Windows 7. I gather from your message that Brother does not have a Win7 driver for this device yet, is that right?

This is a problem with switching over to the latest OS. If I was you I would have waited about six months for MS to fix up most the starting hick ups. Anyway, now that you are already suffering the initial pangs, I would suggest that you firstly disconnect the All in One from the PC. Now uninstall the drivers for this device from Control Panel->Add Remove Programs. Reboot the PC.
Install the drivers from the CD that came with the device and reboot again.
Now connect the device to the PC and allow Windows to detect it and load its drivers. It should give you a msg in the right bottom corner of the screen saying "Your new HW is installed and is ready for use". Start using it now after setting it up in the word processor as default printer and scanner.

I just searched all over and the nearest is Vista 64, which you already have. I am sure Windows 7 would have some backward compatibility. But as you have already ascertained that Vista64 does not help. That means it may be too early to have bought Windows7. Brother's site does not say anything on Win7 drivers for any product. For future products they may cater to (will have to) but presently there is none. Sorry, thats how far Brother goes.

My brother printer MFC 420cn says it is not compatiable with windows 7

The MFC-420CN is part of the BH3 series which brother did not develop drivers or software for compatible with Windows 7.

This does not mean it is not compatible though.
What this means is that you can only use the built in drivers with windows 7.

When you plug is with a USB cable, it should install automatically for printing and scanning.

If you are using a network, you can go through the add a printer in "Devices and printers" but wont be able to scan.

If WIndows does not give you the option to select the MFC-420CN, then you will need to complete a windows update to have the driver.

It is compatible according to the Win7 compatibility Center. If you have any problems, check your cables or network settings.

The link above will take you to a User's Manual for your particular All-In-One. On page 1-2 INTRODUCTION, it shows the button that needs to be pressed in order to access the Scan Mode of your MFC-420CN. Installed software that came with the model should open up when the button is pressed. If not, consult the manual on how to install the software again.

Or you may want to use existing Windows software (example: in Windows Vista, you can use Windows Fax and Scan).

Hope this helps! Give me a rating if it does, thanks!
