Re: Laptop needs charging but he battery goes off when
The battery has probably become deteriorated over time. When I see this problem I usually test the battery in a similar laptop, if you can't do the same then go and get the battery tested at a PC repair place. Thanks, Scott.

If you were given a laptop with a brand new battery, it does need to charge for a while and depends on the manufacturers suggested charge time.
You should be able to power the laptop on without the battery attached. If you can't, you probably have a power supply issue on your hands or a bad component on the mother board. It may be less expensive to just get a new laptop.
You normally need a compatible Power Supply plugged into the Laptop from the mains. Without this the battery will go flat.
If you do not have one a good place to look is Ebay, or the like simply put in the model name of your laptop and the words Power Supply.
EG: IBM ThinkPad T30 Power Supply.
Generally speaking, an orange power light indicates problems with the power. You also described to a "T" how a bad battery behaves. To test this theory, take out the battery and plug in the laptop. It should power up and run. If so, it's time to invest in a new battery.
To be doubly sure, if you have anyone with the same laptop as yourself, plug in their battery to your laptop. It should work if their battery is good.

It could be one of three things. It could be a bad battery, a bad ac adapter, or the recharging circuitry could be bad. I would try pulling the battery out, and see if the laptop will startup and run strictly off of the ac adapter. If that does not work, you have a bad ac adapter. If that works, and the battery has any charge left, try running it strictly on the battery. If it doesnt work, you have a bad battery. If it does work, the circuitry is bad and you will probably need new motherboard. One other thing you can check is where the ac adapter and battery plug into the laptop, and make sure there is no corrosion that could be causing a short.
