4 problems: I am the homes second owner - I

4 problems: Fedders HVAC: I am the homes second owner - I can't locate where the filter is on the unit

everytime the heat kicks on there is a loud gurling of water going thru pipes

heater makes a loud sqealing noise occasionally when kicking on

upstairs is warm 78 degrees where the unit is located;
downstairs in living area is 69 degrees

Hi, let me try and help you locate this filter. They put them on the return side of the system. Depending on the size of you're home, you may have up to 3 or more.Normally, they put them in the ceiling to clean the air as it is drawn back to the blower fan motor.Check through out home to see if they are in the ceiling. If not, go to the unit upstairs.If the blower motor is an up flow with motor above, you should be able to see the filter above the motor.If it is a down flow, the filter should be laying below the blower motor.To sum this up, which ever way this motor is blowing the air would be the supply air flow, and the filter will or should be before the air heading out.It should have an arrow showing the direction of the supply air on the blower housing.The return is the air coming back to the heater, where the filter should be located to catch the dirt and start the cycle again.It could have a grill in the wall next to the furnace, or on the face of the furnace it self.Some will be marked on the furnace and will say return filter excess.It could be that the owner before you removed it, and never installed a new one?There will be some way, grill, in furnace for the air to go back to the blower section. Use a good light to look inside.This loud squealing, sounds as though you have a belt drive blower motor that is worn out.They are on split systems, the older ones.That would be the squeal you hear, go to the furnace upstairs, and by removing panels, you will find the belt and more then likely, the filter section.The belt will have a number on it like, 4L330, 4L460, or even A-37 ect.Easy to remove and replace.A direct drive motor has no belt.It also sounds as though this home has a zone control, using hot water that circulates by the use of a water pump in line somewhere in the system so when it calls for heat, this pump starts sending hot water through out different heating zones in this home, more like a commercial system would have.Gas would heat this water, and flow through pipes to VAV boxes in the ceiling, or maybe your supply vents are on the floor, I don't no this. As for the 9 degree difference in the upstairs and down, could be many causes, as the way this heating system is designed, and what type thermostat controls this unit. It will always be warmer upstairs, as you know heat rises, but you can check the way that the duct work has been installed, and see if indeed this is a hot water zone controlled system.You could have dampers in the duct work controlling the amount of air to different parts of the home that may be shut of causing this much of a differential.Take care of the belt, which you can buy at most hardware stores, keep searching for the filter or filters as they are somewhere on the return side, you may hear or feel the air being sucked back to the unit, that is the return side.Find out by looking for a boiler hot water supply if you have a basement, attic and so on.You will be able to solve a lot of these problems by getting familiar with the way this system is set up. Clean filter light on my Fedders model sfpeb08f2b is on. I have cleaned the filter in the back, is there another filter that I am missing? The light will not go off...

I had the same problem, remove the filter and wash with water and some soap, rinse well and dry well.
Place it again and turn the unit on, if the light does not turn off, unplug the unit and wait about 10 seconds, reconnect the unit and should disappear the red light.
This worked for me, hope it works for you ...

Unit triping braker when compressor turns on

the breaker is underrated the power that it takes to start the compressor is really big but only for a few seconds. That is called the inrush and the breaker should be rated for HVAC wich allows for this.

Thanks for your information that " The unit has very cold air".It's cut off by indoor coil sensor.

Reason for shut off in 5 minutes.(There are one or more reasons for the problem) Check as follows.
1. Evaporator coil,air filter and bower wheel full of dusty. Service your unit completely.
2. Check rpm of blower motor. If less rpm replace capacitor.
3.If all above is o.k and still problem means defective coil sensor. Replace it.

I want to replace the old furnace in my house, I have two options: Fedders 95% Variable speed 2-stage or Tampstar 95% Multispeed Single-stage. Which is the best?.

The 2-stage unit will give you better variable efficiency under differing temperature conditions than a single-stage would. If I had to choose I would pick the Fedders unit, between the 2 you listed. (I install HVAC components for a living...)

Where is cabin air filter location

Hi if you have the 3.8 then follow these instructions.


  1. Left sound insulator panel.
  2. HVAC air filter access cover.
  3. Pull first filter out using filter tab. Filters will bend to clear accelerator pedal.
  4. Pull the second filter out using tab.
  5. Pull the third filter out using tab.
Install or Connect

  • When installing the filter care should be taken so that the filter does not become dislodged from the channel inside of the HVAC module.
  1. First filter in case. Use the tab and raise the filter parallel, so that the leading edge catches on the holding rib.
    • A long thin bladed screw driver may be useful in lifting the filter parallel to the HVAC module.
  1. Engage the second filter in the tab of the first filter and slide it into the remaining channels of the first filter.
  2. Use the tab and raise the filter parallel, so that the leading edge catches on the holding rib.
  3. Engage the third filter in the tab of the first filter and slide it into the remaining channels of the second filter.
  4. Fold the second filter tab down and the third filter tab up and over the second.
  5. HVAC air filter cover.
  6. Left sound insulator

Thanks for your answer, but I was asking about the cabin air filter not the engin air intake filter

The cabin air filter is usually located behind the glove box or at the base of the windshield in the cowl area over the HVAC inlet duct. The exact location can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual or a filter reference guide at the auto part store where you purchase the cabin air filter from.
On most Fords, the filter is located under the hood in the cowl area. On Chrysler models, it is located under the dash. On GM products, it might be under the hood (Impala, Lumina and Monte Carlo), under the dash (Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe) or behind the glove box (Venture). On Toyota, Lexus, Nissan and most Honda models, you’ll find the filter behind the glove box. There is no cabin air filter even listed for a 1998 Oldsmobile Regency.

On vehicles where the cabin air filter is mounted under the cowl at the base of the windshield, some disassembly may be required to replace the filter. This may involve removing a plastic cowl cover. The area around the filter usually collects debris, so this area should be cleaned to remove any leaves, bugs or other debris before the old filter is pulled out. This will prevent any contaminants from falling into the HVAC inlet duct.

On vehicles where the filter is located behind the glove box, the glove box may have to be removed to replace the filter. On others, the filter can be accessed from under the dash and pulled out of a slot in the HVAC unit.

Most cabin air filters are flat-panel filters, but some have unusual shapes, so they will fit the HVAC inlet duct. Some filters also come in two sections to make replacement easier.

We have a Fedders window unit and we do not have an owners manual. When we plug it in it beaps and then blows air for 2sec and then it goes off with the signal E3 showing in the digital box. We need to...

Without the model number, I can't point you to the exact manual for your particular unit. However, here's a link to a web site that has about 38 manuals for various Fedders models. You can download a manual and/or users guide for free and look at the operation and troubleshooting sections to see what you need to do to get your unit working properly.

Too much water condensation

Check your condensate drain. It could be plugged. Or perhaps you have a crack in the drain pan.
