Thank you. USB is connected in the rear. The scanner shows up in the device manager only when it is turned on. There has been some improvement in that a scan was started using the device manager, but it froze halfway through and I had to use the "End Task" feature to close it.

Thank you. It is a Canon Pixma 170. I have tried both the Windows scanner wizard and the Canon software. Windows wizard freezes and now I am getting a new message from the Canon software: "the device is busy or the device's memory is full. Please check the device and try again."

How is the scanner powered? If it's USB powered make sure that it's connected to one of the rear USB ports. Check that it appears in Device Manager.

What make of scanner is it? Are you using their software? Try scanning a reduced area (rather than the full bed) as you may be running into memory problems.

Epson scanner cannot communicate

My solution was that Epson Scan was set to connect via network instead of local. (All was working fine, then it quit-something changed this setting) Try this, go to start, choose all programs, choose Epson folder, choose Epson Scan, choose Epson Scan Setting. In the pop up box set the connection to local or network, whichever is appropriate. Close the window and open photoshop and all works fine. It could be that your problem is the opposite of mine- I try switching this to the other setting even if the change is wrong, then switch it back to see if that works too.

Good Luck.

Scanning

Hi saly_60,

You can try the following steps to resolve the issue:

moz-screenshot-5.png
1. Connect the USB cable directly to a USB port on the computer Ifyou are connecting the device through a USB hub* or other USB device, disconnect it and try connecting directly to a USB port on thecomputer. If successful, the problem may have been with the device.
*Somescanners are powered by the USB connection. This is why connecting thescanner through another device, such as a USB hub, may prevent thescanner from communicating properly with the computer.
Connecting the cable to the your device.

usbtopc.gif
2. Check USB Connections Youshould disconnect and reconnect the USB cable at both ends to ensurethere is a secure connection on the device side as well as the computerside. It may also be necessary to try a different USB port on thecomputer. Additionally, you may need to disconnect other USB devices, temporarily, in order to determine if a conflict exists. .
  1. Disconnectone end of the cable and then reseat it ensuring the cable is firmlyseated into the USB port. If the USB cable is plugged into a hubinstead of directly into the computer, try connecting the USB cabledirectly into the computer.

  2. Repeat step one to reseat the cable on the other end.

  3. If there is still no communication, then it may be necessary to try a different USB cable or a different port on the computer.

  4. Make sure the correct USB cable type is being used.
  5. Incorrect (A to A) USB Cable

3. A device attached to the computer is blocking communication If you have more than one device connected to your computer, thenit is possible that some other device is blocking proper communication.
  1. Check to see if there are any devices (other than USB keyboards or mice) connected to the computer.

  2. Disconnect the device(s) and restart the computer.

  3. Once the computer has restarted, attempt your process again.

4. Press the ON/OFF button to power on the device. The device has an <ON/OFF> button.
  1. Connect the power cord from the device to the electrical source.

  2. Press the <ON/OFF> button.

  3. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting a job request or completing installation.

5. USBSCAN.SYS USBSCAN.SYS is a Windows system fileand required by the scan driver. If the system file is missing, anerror message will appear while installing the scan driver or willappear when attempting to scan. Search for this file and direct theinstallation to the appropriate path.

Search USBSCAN.SYS file on Windows XP:
  1. Click 'Start', 'Search' and select 'For Files or Folders'.

  2. At 'Search Results' window, type usbscan.sys in 'Search for files or folders named' field.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Driver If the MP Navigator or the MP drivers are no longer required, or if they are not installed correctly, uninstall them. Caution:Uninstalling means deleting software, such as MP drivers, from thecomputer. Once the software has been deleted the unit cannot be usedthrough the computer until the software has been reinstalled.

When trying to scan from the computer or printer to computer, I get an error that says "scanner cannot be initialized, scanner communication error"

A hardware issue is the most likely culprit. You can test that by trying to to a copy from the machine with the computer off. (most scanners have a "copier" function that lets you copy a paper directly to another paper) If you can copy a document or image there, then it's not the scanner, and a new cable might resolve the problem. If you can COPY from the copier, and you have a new cable, but the issue persists, then you would know it is a software issue rather than hardware. In that case, have a technician walk you through removal and reinstallation of the driver and scanning application, OR, try scanning from another photo application, such as MSOffice Photo Editor.

I can not get a scan started. Msg appears about an error communicating with scanning device. How do I fix that.

Hello. If you are attempting to scan to a wireless printer your problem is solved. Most printers that are sold as wireless printers are wireless only for the print function, not scan. Therefore, you must hook the usb cable between the printer and the computer to scan.

Canon Pixma MX700 Scanner Problem

I was having the same problem, and thanks to the person who posted solution number two which simply highlighted the fact that the apparently software that came with the Canon Pixma MX700 unit is not compatible with Window Vista.

The reason I was confused is because the printer was working perfectly fine across the network, but when I went to scan my computer would tell me that it can't communicate with the scanner. I'm thinking ... "well since you can communicate with the printer, you should be able to communicate with the scanner, after all, they're the same device!"

As a workaround, I used a third party program to do the scan (in this case, Photoshop) and everything worked fine. If you have Photoshop, just go to file > import to start the scan. If you don't have Photoshop, I would think whatever program you are using for image editing may have the same functionality.

Hope that helps,
Brian

Scanning

Hi,

There could be a communication problem between the All-In-One and the PC.

1. Check bi directional communication:
=============================

Scan from WIA:

For Windows 2000/Me/98
To isolate the issue I suggest you to try scanning from Imaging for Windows which will scan from the all-in-one product using TWAIN software instead of the HP software.

1.Verify that the all-in-one product power is turned on and the printer cable is properly connected.
2.Click Start then Click Programs then Click Accessories then Click Imaging.
3.From the Imaging application, click File, and then click Select Device.
4.Select the HP all-in-one device from the TWAIN source list.
5.Click File, and then Acquire Image.

For XP:
1. Verify that the all-in-one product power is turned on and the printer cable is properly connected.
2. Click Start.
3. Click All Programs.
4. Click Accessories.
5. Click Scanner and Camera Wizard.
6. Follow the Scanner and Camera Wizard instructions to scan images to the computer.

For Vista:
Scanning with Paint
1)Click Start(Windows LOGO ) on your computer
2)Click All Programs.
3)Click Accessories.
4)Click Paint.
5)Click File and then click From Scanner or Camera.
6)Click Scan

Scanning with Windows Fax and Scanning
NOTE: This feature works only with Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Enterprise.

Click File and then click Scan.

Scanning with Windows Photo Gallery

If you are unable to scan using the above methods, please proceed to the next step:

If the issue still persists please post back so that i can assist you further.

Thank you

Agfa scanner 1212

Motti, Have you tried a new cable(USB)from the scanner to the computer.? Does the scanner try to scan something from the unit itself? and just has no communication with the computer. You may also try to uninstall the scanner and software...then rehook the scanner and try to reinstall. Otherwise to be honest there are alot of inexpensive scanners available now that probably don't cost more than the cable. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
