Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

1 Answer

When I start the Dell Dimension 4600, it says "Enter password." But when I type the password, the cursor won't move, and no asterisks appear for each character of the password. After repeated attempts, the message about unsuccessful password attempts comes up. Then it says "System halted! Must power down." There are four diagnostic lights on the back of the tower. The first three are green. The fourth is amber. I tried switching out with two other keyboards, but it still didn't work.

Hello,

First thing I would do is to reset your CMOS by:

1) Power down.
2) Remove power cord.
3) Push power button in and hold for 15 seconds.
4) Open the case.
5) ground you self to the case for a second. (touch bare metal)
6) Remove the battery for 30 seconds.
7) Replace battery.
8) Double check all your connections and cards if any.
9) Close the case.
10) Connect power and power up.

Your diagnostic lights indicate "Other Failure". (The one on the right is amber, correct?) That could be anything. Here is a reference for your diagnostic lights:

Try resetting the CMOS first and comment back.

BTW, this will remove your password too, so you will have to go into the BIOS and reset. You will probably get a "Configuration change" message when you first boot up. Press F1 to go in and then do a Save & Exit.

Thanks for using Fixya.

With Linux or Unix, the password is blind, it will not print anything at all. Just enter the password and press the enter button. It should work fine.

No sound

You should see if you could download the latest drivers for the sound card, this might fix your issue. You can download the drivers for your Dell model here --> http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=. Also there appears to be a patch available, however it might not apply to your audio card. Make sure that you know the manufacturer of the audio card, which can find by going to Start --> Run --> type in "control" (w/out quotes) and then press enter. Click on Sounds and Audio devices and then you should see who the manufacturer is. Hope that this helps

Search the Internet for a password changer. There are several out there. One I've tried is http://www.password-changer.com/order.htm. It's a $60 hit, but worth it in my business.
