Question about Vizio GV42L 42 in. LCD Television

1 Answer

I bought a 42" vizio lcd tv a year ago. The other day it just up and quite working. The picture went black and no sound. It would not even shut off, I had to finally unplug the tv to shut it off. I tried it again the next day. I plugged it in and then turned the tv on. Still no picture or sounds just a black screen. I checked my cables over to make sure the tv was recieving a signal. My cables are fine I used them on another tv they worked fine. So not sure what it could be. Is this something I could fix?

I have never soldered on eletronics before is it pretty hard to do? Also do you have any directions on how to go about checking it out with the meter.

toke out the power board and could not see any resisters or capasiters that looked swelled or blown or burt. I found online I can order a new power board for around $68. Do you think it would be worth my time and money to try it and see if thats the problem. Don't know what else it could be at this time

I am familiar with this type of TV, I haven't seen a lot of bad Vizios though. I think the likely problem is your power supply.

Is this something you would like to repair yourself? Do you have a multimeter and good soldering tools?

If so, this area of the TV comprises some fuses, a bridge rectifier (4 diodes) a couple of capacitors and a regulator that would need to be checked. If it all checks OK, we can move on to something else.

If you take it to a shop, I think you are looking at a $35 estimating fee and a $200-$300 repair bill.

Hope i helped you.

    Thanks for your Response!!

These do Need to be Diagnosed with Proper Instruments. The only thing you could do, ( Works Most of the Time ), You could Open the TV and Pull out the Power Supply Board. Once you Pull that Out, Check the Diodes and Resistors. Most of the Times, you would find the Defective one is Either Swelled / Bulged / Blown. You could easily catch it with Naked Eye. Then, Note Down the Part Number which is Engrossed on it. Go to Radio Shack / Local Hardware Shop or Order Online the Capacitor. You need to then Solder it.

Once Done, it would be all Set.

Note - Working on These Models are Dangerous without any Prior Knowledge of Electronics.

The Best i Could DO, i am Offering you a Link for Service Manual. Read it Carefully. It would have all the Details and Diagrams and Part Numbers.

    Hope i helped you.

    Thanks for your response!!

As there is no Blown capacitors or Diodes, you also need to check the Inverter Board and Video Card. No doubt, the chances are less, but could be the problem.

Vizio GV42L LCD TV screen black when turn TV on first time

If you are using a set top box this might be caused by turnig the box on at the same tie as you turn the tv on or slightly after you turn the tv on.  If you are using compnent or HDMI inputs the set needs to see the signal as it is turned on to know what formt the signal is in.

I’m happy to help further over the phone at
