My printer will not connect to my laptop

My printer has recently stopped printing anything from my laptop. The printer is an PIXMA MP210 and despite which USB port I use on the laptop, the printer status remains offline and will not connect. The laptop is a HP Pavilion dv2000.

well, may I make a few generalized assumptions. Your running Windows XP and You've: A.) gone thru start/control panel/printers and faxes then looked at the Pixma MP210 icon to see if it has a little check mark in the icon? A.1) If not then right clicked on it to set it as default printer(if it wasn't already set as default)? B.) tried to reinstall the printers software or just drivers? C.) went to the printers website to see *IF* you should download the latest drivers? C.1.) went to windows update to make sure you've got the correct updates? hope this starts you enroute to a solution as this is almost always the basic troubleshooting steps I walk in before "throwing up a white flag."

You need to put your printer back online. Depending on your operating system, (I will assume some flavor of Windows) you need to find your printer listed in "Control Panel". Right click your printer icon with your mouse, and choose "Use printer online".

If the document does not print and the job remains queued, a printer icon will appear to the left of the time on the Windows taskbar. Double-click the printer icon in the taskbar. Click on the document title. From the document menu, click "restart".

Did you take off the tape on the nozzle when installing the color cartridge? If you didn't do that, take it off, if you did, just run a couple black and white test pages to get the ink flowing.

The printer won't print PDF and says printer stopped despite reboot on/off

Try restarting the print spooler.
Open up a command prompt by clicking on the start button then selecting run. In the run dialogue box type cmd and hit enter. Once in the command prompt type net stop spooler. It will then display some text saying that it has stopped. Once it has type net start spooler and try printing again.
Btw, what PDF printer were you using?

Printer is not working

The Pixma MP210 does not support a wireless connection. It has a USB port. Some wireless routers do have USB ports and can thus share the printer. Similarly, there are print server options that can be connected to the USB port. However, these will not work with the scanner functions of the all-in-one. Also you would need to confirm that the print server you choose is compatible with the Pixma MP210.

The fastest way to print right now is to connect the USB cord to the laptop. Wait for the drivers to be installed and then send the file to the printer. Moving the cable will let both computers use the scanner features of the all-in-one. A manual USB A/B switch might allow you to share the printer with fewer chances for a damaged USB cable. However, these usually don't support the scanner. Scanning requires bi-directional communication between the printer and the computer. A bad USB cable can turn an all-in-one into a single function printer with a direct USB connection.

Once the MP210 driver is on both systems and they are connected to the same network, you may be able to set up the desktop as a print server for the laptop. This will depend on the OS on both systems. Something like the Windows Homegroup easily allows printer sharing when enabled for systems with Windows 7 and newer on a private network. Both systems need to join the same homegroup. One system starts the homegroup. Then you have to type in the password on the second computer. This works even with one system connected to the wireless network and the other connected to a wired port on the router.

On Vista and XP, you could enable printer sharing as well in the Network and Sharing center. See for the steps With Windows OS versions, the scanner functions will only be available on the computer with the direct USB connection.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the OS versions on both the desktop and the laptop if you need more specific advice.
