Lens error on brand new G9

My brand new Canon Powershot G9 worked great for 1 day. Today however, I kept getting a "lens error" message. At first, just a few of these messages. Now however the camera keeps shutting down with lens is stuck open and I get a "lens error, restart camera" message. I never dropped hit this camera. Is this a defect of the G9 model or just my particular camera?

Bought a new G9 whilst on holiday in Portugal, it worked fine for 2 weeks and has now developed exactly the same problem as described above. Cannot find the receipt so hope that the credit card proof will suffice at my local UK Canon dealer.

I turned my Cannon G9 camera on and 'lens error. restart camera' is the message I see. The lens will not retract and the camera does not function at all except for the message and the opening...

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Lens error, restart camera? Nothing happens when camera is restarted.

The camera may have gotten some dirt or something in the lens. If you need help with it, try this site: www.camerasandparts.com They just deal with service for the Canon Powershot models and nothing else. They do outstanding work on these cameras, that's where a lot of people go for help with the Canons. If you look on their site under their service and repair, you'll see your G9 model. It's $89 for the parts and labor and the servicing for the camera with the return shipping included. They're pretty much unbeatable if you need help with a Canon. They do excellent work. Best of luck with the problem on yours.

My G9 was dropped 4 feet onto cement. I already have a G12, but is it worth having the G9 checked? The lens will not retract & the message upon powering up is "Lens error. Restart camera."

Definitely worth fixing, the G9 is an amazing camera and many will argue it is better than most of the other models that came out after. Since you have a Powershot, you can have it repaired through www.camerasandparts.com They just deal with the Canons and they are not expensive at all. It runs $89 for everything if you just get their lens error service package. They cover parts, labor, servicing of the whole camera, with shipping back included for $89. The best part, they do outstanding work on the Powershots. If you're going to have it serviced, I would go through them. Ultimately you'd need to decide if it's worth the $89 to have a good backup camera, if not I'll take it off your hands. In all honesty, the G9's are great cameras, don't think twice. Have it serviced and enjoy the camera again. That would be my advice.

The problem you have will require the camera being serviced. A reall good place to get help with the G9's is www.camerasandparts.com They only service Canon Powershots and they are really great for these. With them, you would pay $89 for the service package and that covers everything on the repair and the service on the camera included. They're really great if you need help with a Powershot. When you click on that link I gave you it will take you to their site. Look under their complete service packages and you'll see the lens error service there for the G9. I hope that helps with it.

My cannon g9 camera stopped working. the lens is stuck open and it won't turn on. Any suggestions?

Common no power problem on the G9, you just need to get it serviced. There's a great site that only services the Powershots, they're amazing when it comes to servicing these models. On the G9, they do a fix in the camera so the short never happens again which is great, plus they service up the rest of the camera. They don't charge much and they're amazing if you need help with a Powershot. Try them, their site is: camerasandparts.com Good luck, that's the best place if you need help with a Powershot problem.

How do you restart the Canon G9 camera?

There is not way to reset it if you get “lens error”. The lens stuck, you need to send it for repair.

Spot on photos

Go with this place: www.camerasandparts.com They are about half of what Canon charges and they do awesome work on the Canon Powershots. All they specialize in are the Canons, they do really great work and they are so much less than Canon on the service.

Canon G9 has E16 error message-won't turn on

The likely has a short that is causing that E16 Error Code. Since it likely needs a part replaced, you can try this site: www.camerasandparts.com They'll fix any Powershot problem, these are the only models they work on. They are about half the price of Canon for Service and they do excellent work. They exclusively do the Canon Powershot cameras only, they're the guys if you need help with a problem on one of these cameras.
