Question about Edu-Science (10166) Telescope

1 Answer

It doesn't seem possible to tighten the telescope to the telescope mount. The tightening knob seems too loose. Also, there is no way for us to get our fingers into the narrow space to tighten it.

Sure wish you would have NOT bought that telescope. It is a 50mm refractor which is exactly the same size as a pair of 10x50mm binoculars.

The binoculars will have better optics than that telescope.

If it is already broken? Can you return it? You cannot buy a usable good telescope for less than about $200. Here is a good beginner telescope.

There appears to be a KNOB underneath that you loosen or tighten -- and also one on the altitude. Adjust these knobs so that you can move the scope but with some friction---here is the manual

There are only two types of dovetail bars and saddles. A "Vixen style" and a "Losmandy style". One can be mistaken for the other. You probably have a Vixen style. tighten both knobs and you should be OK. Many dovetail bars have a screw hole in the end to place a bolt as a safety device if the bar should slip on the saddle -- the bolt would catch it and prevent the scope from falling off.

Jeep Rubicon Outlook telescope 360X. While I was

Doubtful if you can get parts. Is this a new telescope? If it is return it.

Another possible solution may be to go to a well stocked hardware store and see if they have a bolt or pin that will work.

Read our telescope guide on our Astronomy club web site: The scope is very very small and will never acheive 360 power. I know it is only $69 but the rules for optics say a maximum of 50 times aperture. You front lens cannot be over 1.5 inches so if the optics were perfect and the sky was perfect about 75 power is the maximum possible magnification.

The alt/az adjustment knobs don't work

Are you sure the set screw is tightened? Some scopes have limited adjustment ande the screw need to be "centered" so you can adjust in both directions.

It's a simple solution!
Take the knob off, and use a simple washer, will will hold up in between the plastic and metal surfaces.
This should be your solution!

Balancing a 70mm refractor tube

Looking at pictures I found on the web, I see a knob on the bottom that tightens the scope to the dovetail bracket on the bottom of the scope. First attach all of your eyepiece then loosen that knob and slide the scope back or forth until it will balance without tightening the knob. Or if you do not have the manual you can download it for free here.

it could be the grub screw on the knob needs tightening. If it is loose, the knob will just turn but the shaft wont.
