First--what O/S do you have?
Windows XP should have at least 1GB of RAM to run well. 2GB is much better.
What is running in the background?
From Start run the MSCONFIG command and check the startup tab. Uncheck programs you don't need starting up. You can actually uncheck everything but your antivirus software.
Run scandisk (check your hard drive for errors) then defrag it.
How much free space is on the hard drive? If you are working with less than 25% free space, your hard drive will slow down.

Go to the website http://malwarebytes.org and download the free tool. Scan your computer for Malware. If you have not added any new software, this could be the cause for the slowdown.

Dell latitude C640 laptop battery will not charge. Got a new?? battery but it won't charge either. I am able to run on A/C power just fine.. When I got the computer (used) the battery worked fine... what...

Try taking out battery and plug in power. If it works, battery is faulty. If not,
Try taking out your hard disk plug in power, if it works, hard disk is faulty. If not,
Try taking out memory card, if there's a sound, memory card faulty. If no sound, it's your motherboard that is causing the error.

Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.

Dell Latitude C640 get slowly (CPU nearly 100%) when install wpc54g

Well yes and no. Yes you can uninstall the software but then you will not have any wireless connection. Unless you are going to replace it with something else.

Dell c640 not charging battery

I have found a few things with this model, first if the laptop works on ac power when the battery is out then try pushing the button on the battery itself and see how many lights light up. If they are not green replace the battery it just wore out. Second if you can wiggle the power cord and you see the charge light flash on and off then the solder joints are cracked on the main board and you will have to take the main board out of the case and drill out the 3 rivets on the metal bracket covering the plug and bend it out of the way then there are a small brown and a small black block near the plug resolder the ends of these facing the plug. bend the bracket back into place and epoxy it where it was. put the main board back in the case hook all the stuff back up and now it will charge your battery. If you are not good at this stuff I would not try it yourself. I have fixed 2 c640s this way and it is slow careful work.

Hi

Both Dell Part numbers 18THT and 5W299 are 8X DVD-ROM Drive Modules. DPN 18THT is compatible with Latitude C series and DPN 5W299 is compatible with Latitude D series. The two drives have different and incompatible connectors.

Your Latitude C640 is a C Series Latitude. You can therefore not use DPN 5W299.

If you need a DVD drive module, get DPN 18THT or an alternative Latitude C series drive.

Can I suggest a web site where I can purchase c640 dell laptops in bulk at good prices(not ebay please)?

your best bet is in the retail channel, where returns are a major issue. This time of year, is a good time. Otherwise, those parts go into secondary market, for S. America, etc.

Keyboard

This is a rather old question, but the solution might still be helpful to other readers.

I suggest you call Tech Support at Dell...

Several years ago, I worked on many Dell CPx 500 models in my work place. There was an issue that always involved a series of 4 or 5 keys (they were always the same keys) that would quit working and we had attempted to purchase new keyboards to fix the issue. It turned out, the real solution was to replace the 'motherboard' of the Latitude notebook!

Dell had knowledge about the keyboard/motherboard issue that we didn't know.
