How To Replace a Belt on a Kirby Generation G3-Sentria Vacuum Cleaner

Greetings,

Below we explain how you can replace a vacuum cleaner belt on the Kirby Generation upright vacuum cleaner. All you will need to perform this repair is a new Kirby Generation Upright Belt, and some time. No tools are needed to perform this repair. This repair is the same for all Kirby Generation models including: G3, G4, G5, G6, Ultimate G, Kirby Diamond Edition, and the Kirby Sentria. The repair procedures have to be followed exactly in order for the vacuum to work properly. This should be done at least once a year even if the belt doesn't break, because these belts will stretch out over that year time period and will not work as well as a new belt would.

I hope that you find this video helpful. If you do, please be sure to rate this Tip as helpful by clicking the Thumbs Up Icon in the top right hand corner of the Tip.

Feel free to send me an email anytime if you have any questions on the repair of the Kirby, or any vacuum cleaner.

Generation 3 vacuum. I need to know how to repolace the Kitrby Belt. The video online shows the Sentria, but that has not helped me. The problem I have is the arrows and tightening the...

The arrows should point in the normal running direction of the belt. If you have the correct belt, tension should not be a problem as it is stretched during placement of the sweeper head. Start the motor for a moment with the motor shaft exposed to determine belt rotation direction. Check the bearing ends of the brush to make sure they are free of debris, and that it spins freely with the belt off. Hope this helps!

Is the dial on the head supposed to be turned to belt on or belt off when vacuuming

HI There,

This is a confusing system that Kirby has designed here. This is a source of many questions that we field on a daily basis. There is an exact procedure that needs to be followed when removing the head of the machine that has the roller brush and belt.

You need to have the dial set to Belt On when vacuuming, but when you first put the head back on after using the attachment hose, shampoo attachment, or replacing the belt, you need to first put the head onto the front of the Kirby with the Belt Off setting, then after it's connected to the front, turn the dial back to belt on.

Here's a helpful video that we've recorded showing the exact proper procedure you need to follow on your Kirby. This will also show you how to do basic maintenance on your Kirby's roller brush.

Hopefully this was helpful for you. If you have any follow up questions, or need further help on anything for your Kirby, please feel free to use the comment field here on Fixya, and I'll be more then happy to answer any of your questions. If you found this helpful, please be so kind and rate my repair helpful, or leave feedback for me.

I can't figure out how to get the belt engaged on my Kirby Heritage 84. There are very simple instructions on the front assembly; however, the belt doesn't engage with the rotor, and the beater bar does not spin. When I have the front twisting section on the "Belt On" setting, it seems as though it actually disengages the belt. I see no faults in any of the mechanical parts, but just can't get the belt to go on the rotor.
(I purchased this machine @ a garage sale on Saturday. It's in perfect condition.)
My vacuum cleaner is a Kirby 84 Legend.
Help! Jennifer

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. You can always check your owner’s manual but the Kirby has a dial on the front of the machine and you needs to dial the belt off of the fan pulley counter clock wise and to check to see if the Kirby bell housing will release @ the top so that you can remove the bell housing. If not then remove the bottom plate and take out the brushroll on one side and then slide the belt off of the brushroll. Then you can slide the new belt onto the brushroll to the center and then re-insert the Kirby brushroll with the screw heads facing downward then you can replace the bottom plate – then use the Kirby spoon or hook to dial the belt onto the fan pulley clock wise. Once that is done then plug in the Kirby and try to vacuum to see if the Kirby is picking up properly, if not repeat the process. If you have a question, feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
