Dell Dimension 5000 - Installing extra Hitachi 500GB SATA Hard Drive

I bought and fitted a Hitachi 500GB SATA Hard Drive to my Dell Dimension 5000 Desk Top, but the desk top don't seem to pick up the SATA. I mate of mine said I need to get drivers for the new Hard Drive - I've looked around on the web, but can't realy find anything. Can anybody offer any help please.

Hi i bought a 500gb samsung harddrive thinking to install it into my dimension 5000 but i was missing a data cable. i went to dell to ask about where i could find one and they told me that my dimension 5000 wouldnt support a 500gb harddrive. the max apparently is 400gb... if you have managed to get it to work however. please report back.

You need to turn it on in the Bios so the computer sees the drive, then format it.

I purchased my old computer in 2009 and it came with the Hitachi HD, HDS721010CLA332 (0F10383). That computer has failed and I purchased a new HP Pavilion. Can I take the old Hatachi HD and make it a slave...

Hi there.

Since your hard drive is a SATA drive, there is no such thing as master and slave drive anymore.

All you need to do is plug it into your new computer (assuming there is an extra slot for a hard drive in there). You will need an extra plug from your power supply that will plug into the hard drive as well as a SATA cable that will plug your hard drive into the motherboard.

Another thing you can do is get an external hard drive enclosure and put it in that. Just make sure you get a SATA one, not an IDE one. I hope this helps.

This is a SATA drive, in the SATA configuration each drive is on its own, alone on the cable, no master / slave configuration.

I hate to say this but it sounds like your hard drive has crashed. I would purchase another for about 80 dollars and reinstall windows.

Dell Dimension 5000

you problem is most likely that your bios is out of date. download the latest bios updates for your motherboard and then when you install windows format you HDD with the ntfs system (using the long formatt system not the quick format). Then you should install the bios update. then your mboard shoud no longer have the problem of recognising your large capacity HDD. thanks

You don't need drivers for a hard drive! Just plug it in and it will be recognised by the BIOS.

The only thing you will need to do is make sure you designate it as a primary or slave drive - whatever the old drive was set to. On the back there is what looks like an eight pin plug, with a jumper across two of the pins. Depending which pins are connected will change the drive designation. There is usually a sticker next to them telling you which to connect for primary and slave.
