Question about Epson Stylus Photo 1200 InkJet Printer
Check the preference settings in the printer itself, maybe it has been set to photo printing. Check that the paper is set to plain paper and check that the software you use to print with, is also set to plain paper and letter sizes.. To change the default printer, simply open printers and scanners in control panel, then right click on the HP printer and select "set as default". This will make your HP printer the default printer. Issues like this are usually software or printer firmware issues so go back and start again from the beginning, take nothing for granted, check everything..

You can change the default printer by opening the Printers folder. (Start>Printers and Faxes) Right click on the HP printer and select "Set as Default Printer".
I realize this will not correct the problem with the Epson, but at least you will be able to print what you want.
As far as the Epson goes, do you have the Mode on Automatic or Custom? In that same Printers folder baove, right click and select Properties. Another window will open. What are your settings on the Main, Paper, and Layout tabs?
Thanks for using Fixya.

Delete the Epson printer from your printer list so that the things being printed go to the HP.

I am not sure what program you are using, But the first thing I would check in the program you are using to print, is to go to page setup and see what is setup in there. The values in there override whats in the control panel,
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Alice, I have read many of your comments concerning your question. I understand you are a retired lady and you are having printer troubles. I think you know more than you are letting on!
Don't start any process until you have read everything and are truly ready to take action.
I don't know if I can help you or not but I want to try. You said you don't know a lot about computers like drivers and files and such. Well a driver is a little program that allows your computer to talk to your printer. A file can be a little program that helps your computer run or it can be a e-mail that you just prepared or it can be your novel.
You did say you have two printers, default is a Epson and the other is a HP. You don't say what operating system you use but I will guess you are using a Microsoft product and probably XP or Vista. Alice, if you have two printers and two computers and know what default is, you are way ahead of most people I try to help! You have an operating network!!! What an achievement!
Alice, print drivers are one of the most fluid kinds of programs around. Said differently, today's most modern driver can be replaced tomorrow with one that will not only run the device it is designed for but it will also start your car and shovel the snow for you. Ok, that was a little over the top. Point being that drivers are updated frequently. You may not have the most current drivers for your devices (I call printers 'devices'. Anything attached and many things inside your computer are referred to as 'devices'. There are some 'devices' that don't actually physically exist, rather they reside inside or along side other physical devices. Yet, these "virtual" devices act like they could have been plugged into your USB port (Universal Serial Buss)
Ok, getting to the point, I suggest you remove your printer drivers and reinstall them. You may have this software (print driver) on your desk and that is probably the best place to start, with the original software. When you remove the devices from your computer, it will be necessary to physically disconnect the devices from your computer while BOTH ARE POWERED DOWN (turned off). The process to remove them is to go to the Control Panel (START - find CONTROL PANEL - find PRINTERS - right click on the printer and select DELETE). That is it.
Reinstalling involves putting the CD or Floppy into your computer and allowing the CD to run the show. Do not attach the printer or turn it on until the instructions tell you to do so (USB devices).
Reinstalling the drivers will put all settings for the default and most commonly used settings. When you have installed one, test it to see what happens. Install the other printer and test it. You can set the default printer by selecting it in the printer folder and right clicking - select default to set.
After you have done these things, go to both the Epson and HP web sites and look for updated drivers for your printers that will run on your operating system.
Here are the sites:
When you download the new drivers, if available, look for and read the "READ ME" files that normally accompany the program. There is important information in this document that will explain the process you must follow to install the driver.
It will be necessary, probably, to reboot after you install a new driver. Do each one as a separate issue.
Alice, these are a couple of things I would also suggest you do to care for your computer:
Cleaning: Ccleaner will remove all the junk that accumulates in your computer and slow it down. download it for free at: http://www.ccleaner.com/download There is no charge for this program. and it is updated frequently and only with your permission. When you run this program you will use the top left hand side programs. Run Cleaner first and Registry second. Accept the default values - you dont need any backups of the stuff it will suggest you remove.
Spy Bot - Search and Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ This free program will look for little routines on your program that track your computer usage. The first time you use it, it may run for several hours. Under the TOOLS tab on the left hand side, is a area called TWEEKS - within this tab, you will find a TWEEK that will allow you to modify your Internet Explorer by putting your name at the top bar for example. It is a fun thing to do.
Benchmark: pcpitstop www.pcpitstop.com This site will perform a free computer scan for you though they may want to sell you things along the way. After the free scan, you will get a comprehensive report on the status of your computer hardware, software, settings, performance, connections and a whole lot of other stuff you never thought about. It will also recommend any drivers that need to be updated.
After the cleaning I suggest you defragment your hard drive. Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - defragment.

Can I please get a better description of the failure.
Right now all I can infer is that you have a Epson 1200 installed and set up as your default printer.
You appear to have defined letter size is your preferred page size. On the Epson printer, but you have not defined what the failure is and to which printer the data is being sent to,
Is the HP even an issue in this problem? Please let me know what printer you are printing to and what are you expecting the printout to look like.
I'll be online for awhile so please get back to me as soon as possible.
