Question about Epson Stylus Photo 1200 InkJet Printer

7 Answers

Above printer set as default on my PC. All preferences indicate letter size (8 1/2 x 11); all my emails, maps and other print to a 4x6 size in corner of sheet. I also have an HP Photosmart A826 hooked up to my PC. But as said before, Epson 1200 is default printer. What to do?

You appear to have defined letter size is your preferred page size. On
the Epson printer, but you have not defined what the failure is and to
which printer the data is being sent to:

The failure is that default printer is Epson, right? The failure is that when I print to the Epson in hopefully letter size, it prints in a 4x6 size in a corner of the paper. And not all the email or whatever I am printing prints out.

Is the HP even an issue in this problem? Please let me know what
printer you are printing to and what are you expecting the printout to
    look like.

I don't know - it never was before. When I want to print to the HP, I select the HP printer and out comes a nice 4x6 photo.

The problem is that a 4x6 size document (not all of which prints out) prints when I print to the Epson.

Does this make sense? I hope so. Thank you!

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 1200 as default hooked up to my PC. I also have an HP photosmart A826 hooked up to my PC.

MY PROBLEM is when I print to the default printer (most of the time!) the page prints to a small 4x6 portion of the 8 1/2 x 11 letter size page. I do not get the whole page!

Don, the expert, misunderstood my problem. And I need help - this has been going on for about 6 months now! And I bit the bullet and am paying FixYa to help.

Do you understand my problem? I am trying to print to the EPSON default printer. I have no problems printing photos to the HP printer.

    Thank you, thank you!

  • alicearikawa Dec 12, 2009

No I have been doing this all along and it is NOT THE SOLUTION!

    Please understand!!!

I followed what you said - and I printed out your email and the only thing that prints out is

Fi (from FixYa) in the upper lefthand corner in huge letters! I have gone into print set up but I should not have to adjust print or font size each time I print out an email or internet page.

    Do you understand?

    Thank you.

  • alicearikawa Dec 12, 2009

Thank you, no I did not ever think you were trying to fleece me. I am just frustrated and perhaps cannot communicate well in my frustration.

That being said, I am not computer savvy - when you say on the driver, print to file, where do I find that.

I have been retired for 3 years and my husband for 10 so we are not up on computer programs and stuff like that.

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Thank you for assistance in solving my Epson printer problem. I understand the need to uninstall driver and reinstall new/updated driver. However, I am unable to follow the directions to a favorable conclusion. Is there any way I can call an 800 number and get verbal assistance to help me through the steps? Thank you.

  • alicearikawa Dec 17, 2009

Sorry, you are at least #3 or #4 of replies and I don't necessarily want to start all over again. Can you get me back to Don Farr and let him handle this as he was the first person I worked with and he knows my problems. Thank you.

  • alicearikawa Dec 17, 2009

I love the thoroughness of your answer to my problem. Thank you so much.

Is there any way that I can call you on an 800 number or something and ask you to walk me through the steps. I got to the disconnect part of the message but when I go into the rest of it, it becomes a little bit too much. I followed the link you gave me as my daughter, who gave us the printer, does not have the disc. But stopped in my tracks after I opened it.

    Please advise.

    Thank you.

  • alicearikawa Dec 18, 2009

You speak like my husband who retired from the federal reserve bank after 23 years as a network analyst. I want a divorce! Just kidding...

Hp printer has nothing to do with it I suppose.

My problem is I print email and maps and it prints in corner of page either very tiny or huge font so that entire page is never printed.

I open Mozilla and my husband uses Internet explorer. Most of the time he can print out maps whereas I can't in a standard 8 1/2 x 11 format.

  • alicearikawa Dec 18, 2009

Thanks for your attempt to help me - you are about the 5th expert so far.

I cannot print 8 1/2 x 11 pages on my HP photo printer, only 4x6, so that is out.

I followed your instructions to go to start, printer and faxes, and stuff like that but that was done thousands of times with no success.

If you have a picture of my problem - when I print to the epson, it prints in the upper lefthand corner only and in very small font, and sometimes in giant font. I do not get the whole page, even in the small upper portion of the page, so for example if I'm printing a Yahoo map, I get just a portion of the map and it prints out maybe 6 pages in portions. Do any of you understand my problem?

Thank you for trying. But please keep trying.

  • alicearikawa Dec 18, 2009

Thank you for this extremely complex and thorough reply. Is there any way that you or someone in your organization can call and walk me through the installing new printer driver process? I have tried to go in but am stymied by about the third mouse click.

Please advise but I thank you so much. You are the first person to really try to help me.

    alice

  • alicearikawa Dec 19, 2009

Yes, thank you. It worked great. We have windows xp. When we first got the Dell about 3 years ago it worked great. My husband signs on to Internet explorer and is able to print out okay most of the time. I sign on in Mozilla firefox and changed to gmail from sbc Comcast or something and added some software for Kodak gallery and flip photo frame and my husband thinks I have too much junk on and it has screwed up my being able to print emails, attachments and maps among other things. I have deleted all games and unnecessary stuff in hopes of cleaning up hard drive. Short of getting 'geeks' in here which can cost a lot of $$$.

  • alicearikawa Dec 21, 2009

Thanks for the effort, but I get stuck each time I try with a little window that pops up that says window extractor, unzip or winzip or something. There is no desktop to hit. Screeching halt...what to do.

Check the preference settings in the printer itself, maybe it has been set to photo printing. Check that the paper is set to plain paper and check that the software you use to print with, is also set to plain paper and letter sizes.. To change the default printer, simply open printers and scanners in control panel, then right click on the HP printer and select "set as default". This will make your HP printer the default printer. Issues like this are usually software or printer firmware issues so go back and start again from the beginning, take nothing for granted, check everything..

You can change the default printer by opening the Printers folder. (Start>Printers and Faxes) Right click on the HP printer and select "Set as Default Printer".

I realize this will not correct the problem with the Epson, but at least you will be able to print what you want.

As far as the Epson goes, do you have the Mode on Automatic or Custom? In that same Printers folder baove, right click and select Properties. Another window will open. What are your settings on the Main, Paper, and Layout tabs?

Thanks for using Fixya.

My apologies. We do not see all of the comments until we post a solution. Kind of dumb, I know. I now see that you have been trying to solve this for some time.

I also see that this printer is nearly 10 years old! What operating system are you using?

    Alice,

    A couple questions:

    1) What operating system are you using? XP? Vista? Win98?

    2) Has this printer EVER worked properly on this computer?

The reason I am asking is because Epson does not have a Windows XP or Vista driver for this printer due to its age. The only drivers available are for Windows 95, 98, 2000, and NT.

OK Alice. Thanks for the reply. I will try to give you step by step instructions for installing a new printer driver. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.

First go to this website: Epson Stylus Photo 1200 Driver

There is a big green Download button. Click on it.

In a moment you will get a download window. Select Save. When you do another window will open.

On the left side of this window it will say Desktop. Click Desktop. Click Save. This will start the download. When it is completed, close the download window.

Verify the file is now on your desktop.

Then click on Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. When the list appears, scroll down to the Epson software and click Remove over on the right.

Then close the control panel. Click on Start>Printers and Faxes. verify the Epson printer is gone. If it is not, right click on it and select Delete.

Shutdown your computer. Shutdown the printer. Verify the cable is connected.

Now turn the printer ON. Turn your computer ON. If you get a Found New Hardware window Cancel it out.

When the computer is fully up, run (double-click) the file on your desktop that you downloaded. This will install the driver.

    That's my last best answer.

Delete the Epson printer from your printer list so that the things being printed go to the HP.

Hi Alice

I am not sure what program you are using, But the first thing I would check in the program you are using to print, is to go to page setup and see what is setup in there. The values in there override whats in the control panel,

Let me know how it goes.

thanks adi

Hi Alice, I have read many of your comments concerning your question. I understand you are a retired lady and you are having printer troubles. I think you know more than you are letting on!

Don't start any process until you have read everything and are truly ready to take action.

I don't know if I can help you or not but I want to try. You said you don't know a lot about computers like drivers and files and such. Well a driver is a little program that allows your computer to talk to your printer. A file can be a little program that helps your computer run or it can be a e-mail that you just prepared or it can be your novel.

You did say you have two printers, default is a Epson and the other is a HP. You don't say what operating system you use but I will guess you are using a Microsoft product and probably XP or Vista. Alice, if you have two printers and two computers and know what default is, you are way ahead of most people I try to help! You have an operating network!!! What an achievement!

Alice, print drivers are one of the most fluid kinds of programs around. Said differently, today's most modern driver can be replaced tomorrow with one that will not only run the device it is designed for but it will also start your car and shovel the snow for you. Ok, that was a little over the top. Point being that drivers are updated frequently. You may not have the most current drivers for your devices (I call printers 'devices'. Anything attached and many things inside your computer are referred to as 'devices'. There are some 'devices' that don't actually physically exist, rather they reside inside or along side other physical devices. Yet, these "virtual" devices act like they could have been plugged into your USB port (Universal Serial Buss)

Ok, getting to the point, I suggest you remove your printer drivers and reinstall them. You may have this software (print driver) on your desk and that is probably the best place to start, with the original software. When you remove the devices from your computer, it will be necessary to physically disconnect the devices from your computer while BOTH ARE POWERED DOWN (turned off). The process to remove them is to go to the Control Panel (START - find CONTROL PANEL - find PRINTERS - right click on the printer and select DELETE). That is it.

Reinstalling involves putting the CD or Floppy into your computer and allowing the CD to run the show. Do not attach the printer or turn it on until the instructions tell you to do so (USB devices).

Reinstalling the drivers will put all settings for the default and most commonly used settings. When you have installed one, test it to see what happens. Install the other printer and test it. You can set the default printer by selecting it in the printer folder and right clicking - select default to set.

After you have done these things, go to both the Epson and HP web sites and look for updated drivers for your printers that will run on your operating system.

Here are the sites:

epson http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportIndex.jsp

HP http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

When you download the new drivers, if available, look for and read the "READ ME" files that normally accompany the program. There is important information in this document that will explain the process you must follow to install the driver.

It will be necessary, probably, to reboot after you install a new driver. Do each one as a separate issue.

Alice, these are a couple of things I would also suggest you do to care for your computer:

Cleaning: Ccleaner will remove all the junk that accumulates in your computer and slow it down. download it for free at: http://www.ccleaner.com/download There is no charge for this program. and it is updated frequently and only with your permission. When you run this program you will use the top left hand side programs. Run Cleaner first and Registry second. Accept the default values - you dont need any backups of the stuff it will suggest you remove.

Spy Bot - Search and Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ This free program will look for little routines on your program that track your computer usage. The first time you use it, it may run for several hours. Under the TOOLS tab on the left hand side, is a area called TWEEKS - within this tab, you will find a TWEEK that will allow you to modify your Internet Explorer by putting your name at the top bar for example. It is a fun thing to do.

Benchmark: pcpitstop www.pcpitstop.com This site will perform a free computer scan for you though they may want to sell you things along the way. After the free scan, you will get a comprehensive report on the status of your computer hardware, software, settings, performance, connections and a whole lot of other stuff you never thought about. It will also recommend any drivers that need to be updated.

After the cleaning I suggest you defragment your hard drive. Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - defragment.

Alice, I hope this information is of some value to you. If you need more information or have additional questions, I am ready to try to assist you as a volunteer question catcher here at FixYa.com I am sorry this has been going on for so long and I hope we can solve your trouble.

Thanks for the opportunity to jabber on and on

Can I please get a better description of the failure.

Right now all I can infer is that you have a Epson 1200 installed and set up as your default printer.

You appear to have defined letter size is your preferred page size. On the Epson printer, but you have not defined what the failure is and to which printer the data is being sent to,

Is the HP even an issue in this problem? Please let me know what printer you are printing to and what are you expecting the printout to look like.

I'll be online for awhile so please get back to me as soon as possible.

    Good Evening Alice,

Let me make sure I have a correct understanding of the failure.

You have an Epson defaulted as your main printer.

Your are looking at a print job but want it to print to your HP printer, is that correct?

From the application you are using, got to File > Page Setup and verify that you have the correct printer selected.

Also verify that the page is defined correctly in both the document you are working on and the Page Setup.

Most often this is nothing more that a cross-up in where you think the data is supposed to go to and how the page is actually set up.

I have to drop off for the night but I'll be checking in tomorrow.

If this is really urgent, please send a not to don.farr@verizon.net and I'll continue to help you after a family break.

    Alice,

Thanks for the feedback. I did not have a clear understanding of your description.

There are two ways to go about helping you. One is to bounce back and forth with questions and the other is to examine the data file being sent to the printer.

On the driver, there is an option to do a "Print to File". Check this box and the driver will then ask you to name the file. Type in pagesize. The driver will then generate a file names "pagesize, prn"

You can then use WinZip to create a compressed fie or folder and send it to me at don.farr@verizon.net I have some tools that will tell me what data is being sent to the printer. If the datastream is something I cannot interprete (raster image) I will know that right away.

If it is a datastream that can be edited I should be able to repair the file and send it back to you. If you are using Word to generate the file, please also send me the original datafile so I can open it in Word and see the document settings.

I am not trying to fleece you, please understand that. If I cannot help you I will tell you so. Also, I believe you can refuse to pay if my response is inaccurate.

    Alice,

I retired in June of 2005 from Lexmark. I was the Critical Situation Manager within the Lexmark Technical Support Staff.

You are dealing with more than one responder here.

Here's a thumbnail description as to what I believe is going on. In the application, you have a document that you want to print. The application (Application Space) tells the operating system is ready to print. The operating system calls the default printer's driver. A driver is an interactive program written by the manufacturer to talk to the application and decide how to put the spots on the page, so to speak.

Once the document is ready for printing, the driver then passes the data to the printer to be printed.

Depending on the printer two things can happen. If the printer is classified as an intelligent printer, the driver will encode printer commands into the datafile for the printer to act on. If, however, you have an intelligent driver, the data file will contain only "raster" information. The actual spots, no command data.

Creating a "Print File" is the output of the driver going to the printer. From the data, we can read whether or not the printer is getting commands. If it is then with a Hex Editor, the commands can be modified. However if it is a raster image file, I will not be able to play with the file. If the is encapsulated with a Job Command Set, I can read through that and verify the setting that the application is sending to the printer.

What application are you using to create the printed page?

When you open the document that you want to get printed, go over to the left on the menu bar. You will see the word "FILE". Click on "File" an a drop down menu will be displayed. About halfway to 3/4s of the way down you will see "Page Set Up".

Click on "Page Setup" and a box will open up. Sometimes the "Save to File" will be right there. Otherwise you may have to look for a "Printer Properties" to click on.

If you are using an application like Word or Word Perfect, you can just send the document to me and I can look at it and see if there is a problem in the document.

If you would like to continue with me, we will need to take this offline of this system. I suggest you contact me at don.farr@verizon.net. Also, I'll be happy to help at no additional fees. Just between retirees so to speak. Please, continue here in this forum just in case I'm moving down the wrong path.

Select [properties]
Select [Advanced] tab
Select [Printing Defaults]
[Advanced}

Change paper size to "Letter"
