Question about Heating & Cooling

Removed capacitor from Ruud upkb-024JAZ and took pics of the wiring before removal. Unit has a different color ring beneath each connection and (of course) different color wires connecting to each. Replacement capacitor is a new part# that fits correctly the colored rings are all black. They are labeled ''fan'', ''Herm'' and ''C''. I can't find a wiring diagram online anywhere so any assistance with the color vs. labels would be greatly appreciated. This is our home heating unit and it's going to dip into the 30's tonight. Thanks in advance. - Rich

    Thanks Shastalaker7,

Believe it or not, the old capacitor doesn't have those markings. It's a bit rusted, but the marks are not there. The old capacitor is a Rheem and the new one that the A'C supply house cross referenced is a no name from Pakistan. I thought of following the wires, but one I can't tell where it goes and another one goes into a circuit board (don't know what to do with that one).

    Problem Solved!

Received a call from an A/C tech that I hadn't been able to reach and he knew the colors off the top of his head! Thanks for the help.

In most cases you will have a single wire going to the fan from the "fan" terminal on the capacitor. Usually a brown wire. A single wire to the compressor from the "herm" terminal to the compressor. Usually a yellow wire. All other wires go to the "C" terminal from the contactor for power in. Usually red wires. Turn off the power to the unit. Using this information along with your photo you can trace wires to their respective components for wiring.

Rich, the capacitor that you removed should say the same thing on top, Herm, for the compressor, fan for the condenser fan motor, and c for common. This is a dual run cap. If you have the old cap and it is marked the same, just put wires to the terminals you removed. If not, here is how to solve this problem. You should have 3 wires.Take 1 wire and follow it back and if it goes back to the fan motor outside, plug it to the fan terminal. Repeat with the next wire. The one that heads off toward the 3 wires of the compressor will go on the hermetic terminal, the last wire will be from the contactor area and will plug on the C or common terminal. Very easy Rich.Take you're time. You can also look at the wiring diagram and it will show you by color how to terminate, but I would do it 1-wire at a time. Again, follow one that heads to herm compressor. Plugs in Herm. One that goes to outdoor fan. Goes to fan. And last C follow to where it goes near or on contactor, a common wire. You can do this, and let me know. Just follow them back now that you know what they stand for, herm is compressor, fan is the condenser fan, and C is a common wire. Best of Luck and let me know.

I have a RUUD Heat Pump Model UPPB-024JAZ the outdoor pump stopped working last week. The reset button fixed the issue but whhy does it keep going off.

To start with, the tech charged you for an hours worth of service and only pushed the button. GET YOUR HOURS WORTH!
•The outdoor coil needs to be cleaned. Turn off power at the breaker and t-stat, clean the coil with water hose
•The outdoor fan motor may be slowing down or stopping due to motor bearings dry or weak run capacitor. Any noise/squealing from motor?
•Too much freon in the system.
•A restriction in the freon system.
•A improperly installed/mismatched system
•A (kynk) in the liquid line(3/8 copper)
•A stopped up or clogged filter dryer
•A dirty indoor coil that has an expansion valve(txv) will run too cold and the valve can close near "seated"
All of these, and more, can cause a HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH to open. When yours open, you have the red button to push which resets it(the switch). I have also found that the plenum(duct box that connects to your indoor unit at the discharge air) is supposed to be tapered to the air opening size of the blower outlet but that's hard to explain. If the plenum size is the same size of your indoor unit, width and depth in the upright position, the your plenum is not "tappered"(goes from one larger size to smaller size where connected to the I.d. unit). In that scenario, the high pressure switch opens during heat operation, not cool. I know, confusing. Try cleaning your o.d. coil first. And try to get an hour of work(or close) for an hour paid. And WORK SAFE!

Uaka 024JAZ condensing unit comes on, fan and compressor start up, fan remains on, compressor shuts off in appx 1 min , pressures appear to be headed to normal op range. I did not see a run cap for this...

This unit uses a dual run capacitor. There is no start capacitor involved.

The dual run capacitor is possible weak, also check all the electrical connections for tight fitting connections with can cause motor/compressor overheating.
To test a capacitor properly you need the proper test meter capable of reading uf readings(within 6% of the stated rating on the capacitor) "C" common to "F" fan and "C" to "Herm" terminal, the higher rating for compressor and the lower for the outdoor fan. [(example= 25/3uf 370v) 25uf=compressor, 3uf=fan motor.]

The fan does not spin

If this unit is located outdoors then it is your condensor fan. Can you hear the compressor come on? If not it could be the capacitor is bad,
If compressor comes on but fan does not, it is most likely your fan.

Need to find a reversing valve for a ruud achiever series model UPKB-024JAZ

The easiest way to achieve this is to determine the manufacturer of the failed valve (Alco, Ranco.....). Next you need to determine the size of the stubs, and third, you need to determine the coil voltage.....it is recommended you replace the coil when you replace a reversing valve. With this information in hand, you should be able to obtain a reversing valve from just about any A/C supply house. :-)

The outside fan motor (OFM) will not turn off.

it sounds like your fan connector is on the same side of the contactor where your high voltage enters you should have 3 wires 1 wire for each pole of the contactor and 1 wire off the capacitor does the compressor run all the time too? try turning the power switch off on your indoor air handler / gas furnace if the power goes off the fan goes off then it could be low voltage wiring
