You need in's and one out. The out is called the uplink. The other ports are for devices. You might find your router works better on a peer to peer basis if you have multiple routers. for this config, you dont use the "uplink" to connect to the next router, rather use one of the other ports.
May I recommend Network Magic for your network duties. NM will assist you in security and conectivity concerns. Plus, it is fun to use. You may find it is well worth the couple $ they ask after the eval period.
