Hi There,
A few options you could try here,
i. Uninstall any programs you installed just before having this issue..
2. Restore you pc back to the time/date when all was working well.

Hope this helps...

Desktop icons gone

Right click on an empty area of your desktop, there should be an option to 'Show Desktop Icons', if it's not there, go to 'Arrange Icons By', it should be in there.

When starting the computer

A main reason for that is because you removed your password, thats why it goes straight to your desktop, to enable your password.... 1.Start menu 2. click your picture icon on top of your username 3.click enable password
If the icons on your desktop are gone its because you disabled those as well enable them by... 1.right click desktop 2.view 3.click enable desktop icons..

Icon for speakers gone

Dear Jesuslovsu,
Please go to control panel --> Sound and Audio device properties and select the check box that says "Place volume icon in the taskbar"
If these controls are greyed out then you might want to install the sound card drivers ones again... The CD might have come along with your computer purchase kit.
If that doesn't resolve the issue then kindly let me know and I would be glad to assist you ahead.
Hope that helps.

Regards,
Srinivas

Try a system restore if it will allow you. If not you may need to run a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc.

1. I am not able to open attached files, other than Acrobat, Text etc. The typical file is not accesable. MS says this has always been that way in Outlook. I use Outlook 2003, and have since it came...

The simplest things to fix are your sound icon and your calculator. To get your sound icon back down in the taskbar, click Start, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, and check the box beside "Place volume icon in the taskbar". For the calculator, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Calculator. You can click and drag the calculator off the list and onto your desktop, or right-click and make a shortcut to the desktop.

For the Outlook problem, try this: Click Help, then Detect and Repair. I don't know if this will work. As for the rest of it, I can't help.

It will be in the lower right hand corner of your desktop by the time.

The desktop is empty

First a question; you say you only have the background and cursor does that mean literally everything else is gone including the start button in the lower left and the task manager in the lower right? Or do you mean that all your icons, shortcuts, folders and files you had on your desktop are gone?
