Burner lights and shuts off 3 times and then give warning lights A and B

It depends on the model but AB on most of the AOS the A & B LED's lighting up usually means ignition/flame failure.

Ignition/flame failure:

The gas control valve/thermostat has reached the maximum number of retries (3) for ignition and is currently locked out for one hour. Cycle the power to the water heater off and on to reset.

Basic troubleshooting/solutions:

1 Ensure flame sensor is making good contact with the burner flame and ensure flame is steady. Also ensure supply and manifold gas pressures are within the requirements in the installation manual.

2 Gas supply is turned off - pressure is too low. For low gas pressure, consult with your gas utility.

3 Ensure the flame sensor is clean - use fine steel wool to clean the flame sensor.

4 Check igniter assembly plug and the socket on the bottom of the gas control valve/thermostat for good connection. Replace igniter assembly if the plug is worn or damaged. Replace the gas control valve/thermostat if socket is worn or damaged.

5 Replace igniter assembly.

If this does not apply to your model then here is a link to the instruction manuals for all models:

Does the vent motor come on when you turn on a powervent hot water heater

`1) Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve, blower motor links, pressure switch testing, and other professional resources:

http://www.thetankatwaterheaterrescue.com/forums/forum3/

2) Power-vent blower motor can go bad.
Plug motor directly into outlet, or turn on-off switch on, and see if motor works.
Check outlet for correct polarity, and for at least 80% of rated voltage.
Check vacuum switch. Blower creates vacuum, and the vacuum switch detect vacuum, and signals gas control valve that burner sequence can continue.
Gas control valve can also go bad. Wiring etc can go bad.

I have a Bradford White model# MITW50L6CX10, serial# TA4176718-130-131, 48 gal., gas, power vent. The vent is running constantly, and when the burner lights it burns erratically even going all the way out...

1) First suspects include Honeywell icon gas control valve, loose-or-bad wiring, and dirty burner parts.

2) MITW50L6CX10 blower number is 239-39785-00. Blower is working, but communication between blower and gas control valve are suspect.
Water heater has 6 year warranty
Water heater was manufactured January 1999.

3) Typical service manuals for M-1-TW-50 TTW series show how to test and replace Icon gas control.
Multimeter is required for testing.
Also shows how to clean burner parts and combustion chamber and air intake to catch up on regular maintenance.

Your power vent water heater with electronic gas control went under water.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Flooded-water-heater.html

I suspect the gas control valve is bad, and possibly the ECO and FVIR sensors shorted.
Repairs might require replacing gas control, eco, fvir, igniter, and then clean burner and combustion parts.
Open following link to identify typical gas valves: and possibly read service manual for troubleshooting that model.

I have an Atwood electronic ignition 6 gal. water heater. When I flip the switch to light, I can hear the ignitor sparking but there is no ignition. How can I isolate the problem?

Use a multimeter or test light for 12volt DC, and check at gas valve for 12 volts when it is trying to ignite (you here/see it sparking ). If no 12 volts to there, it will not ignite because no gas is flowing through valve. Try removing the connectors on the circuit board/module ( with switch in off position ) and cleaning the board contacts with a pencil eraser, and spray WD-40, or preferably an electrical spray/contact spray on connector contacts and retry. Board, or module may be located outside , or inside on top of tank, depending on what year and set-up. If that doesn't work, there is a small cut-out enclosed in plastic sleeve right near pressure relief valve area, that looks like a resistor that may be faulty. Remove it from the circuit and try it then. Simply pull the wire off at thermostat, pull that out of the sleeve by disconnecting it from the female spade connector, then put female spade where it used to be on thermostat terminal. If it works, buy a new thermal cut-off. If all that is done and tried, and still doesn't light, replace module.

The igniter is glowing, but no gas ignites?
So either the gas is entering combustion chamber and not lighting because igniter is positioned incorrectly -or- no gas is entering combustion chamber because air in gas line or bad gas control valve thermostat or gas line is clogged.
When you 'restart' the water heater, somehow you are getting gas to the burner and it is igniting.
I'm not sure what the flame switch is. If the ECO was cut out, the gas control valve would not send power to the igniter and there would be no gas available for 'restart.'
I would adjust location of igniter, check if gas is entering combustion chamber, clean the gas line to the burner, and bleed gas line for air, but another suspect could be the gas control valve thermostat.
Identifying numbers are usually on side of gas valve.

The water heater red light keeps flashing rapidly on my Powervent 2 model 41VRP40N. It is not producing hot water and when I read the manual it says it needs more heat. What does this mean. How do I fix...

There are many things to check. The single most important test is for 24V at the gas valve after the ignitor is supposed tp be on. 19 V or less and there is either a bad ground or the ingition control board has failed. (Wire ground problems are a high probablilty)

Here is what the book says:

PROBLEM #1 - HOT SURFACE IGNITOR DOES NOT GLOW RED

(Remember to wait for purge time, 17/34 seconds, on models so equipped).

Possible causes

A. No main power

B. Faulty transformer

C. Faulty thermostat

D. Faulty limit switch

E. Faulty blower interlock switch

F. Faulty hot surface ignitor

G. Faulty ignition control

Solution

Step #1

Perform normal system checks of main power, transformer, thermostat, limit

switch, blower interlock switch, and replace faulty component.

Step #2

With power on and thermostat set at its highest position, check voltage

between "TH" and "TR" on HS780 ignition control. If 24 volts is not present

check output at transformer. If no, replace transformer. If transformer

checks out OK look at other controls in the 24 volt circuit I.E.: thermostat,

limit switch, blower interlock switch. Check for 120 volts between "neut"

(L2) and "120" (L1). Check for 120 volts at the ignitor across "IGN" and

"IGN" terminals on the HS780 ignition module. If 120 volts is present,
replace ignitor. If no, replace the 780 series module

PROBLEM #2 - IGNITOR GLOWS RED BUT MAIN BURNER

WOULDN'T LIGHT

Possible causes

A. Improper ignitor alignment

B. Faulty ignition control

C. Faulty gas valve

D. High inlet gas pressure

E. Polarity reversed

F. No earth ground

Solution

Step #1

Check for availability of gas at gas valve. Make sure the manual valve

upstream of the gas valve and the gas valve are in the full on position. Also

make sure gas is being supplied to the system at the proper pressure, too

high will lock-up the valve.

Step #2

Check proper polarity of "NEUT" and "120" on the ignition control by reversing

the wires, if reversed gas valve will not open. If this does not solve the

problem, replace wires as they were.

Step #3

Check for proper ignitor position.

Step #4

Check for a good earth ground by using a meter connected between L1

and furnace chassis. Should read 120 volts, if no, check and/or repair ignition
ground wire or ignition control mounting screws.
CAUTION POLARITY MUST BE OBSERVED

Step #5

Check for 24 volts at the gas valve terminals; "1" and "2" on a 7200 series,

"M" and "C" on a 7100 series, "TH" and "TR" on a 7000 series. If yes,

check wire integrity or change the gas valve. If no, change the 780 series
ignition module.

That is pretty much all of the troubleshooting required.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly
