The laser in the drive is probably going bad. Use a can of air and blow some into the drive so that way your making sure no specs of dust or dirt are on the laser. If after you do that it still won't play any discs, then you know the laser is bad so you can either replace the laser or replace the whole drive which is easier to do.
I'de just take it down to your local tech store and ask. If they can't buy a new PS3 disc drive or something like that. Keep the receipt and if it doesn't work take the drive back!
If the PS3 can't read the disks, the laser is the only thing that could cause the trouble. You could've scratched the laser when you cleaned it, or it could have been broken from the start. I recommend calling Sony and calling for a repair. Just hope that they will repair it for free even though you voided the warranty by opening it up.
I think you are right, try checking the laser that reads the discs see if it is clean, and yes that may mean taking it apart (No I don't know, because I don't have a PS3)
Hi... The laser wont go on unless the disc is IN and the cover is closed. There is a disc brake post coming down from the LID . If it's broken , the disc wont spin/read. The post is on the back right of the LID it (normally) goes thru a cutout that moves the brake out of the way. Other troubles are debris on the worm gear that drives the laser assembly back n forth. If the post is broken drill out the old one and put some kind of plastic or wooden stick about 1/4 inch long in it's place
