There will be no damage to the laptop but what I think has happened is the adapter has blown try to replace it take the adapter to get checked out. After the lightening attack did the computer run till the battery run out if so the adapter is the problem.

I am having celeron processor with 256 RAM and 40GB HDD Can i install Windows 7 or Vista over this processor

Well, Vista and Windows 7 require at least 1GB of system RAM to run, If I were you I'd think about upgrading with more memory. Otherwise you will experience a very slow PC, the RAM problem will then slow down your CPU and you'll end up with a big mess.

I have a ACEer 5315 model no ICL50 running Windows Vista. To say Vista is **** is an understatement. I want to switch to Windows 7 but guess I will need a lot more RAM for this. Can I upgrade Ram on this...

Hi,
I recommend that you switch to Windows 7 without upgrading your RAM. Windows 7 is a lot faster, better and uses less RAM than Vista. Recommended RAM for running Windows 7 is 1GB but I have installed them on a Centrino 1.5GHz with 768Mb of RAM and they run perfectly.
So make the upgrade to Windows 7 anyway and if you feel that you need more power then you can get more RAM.
Also, download Windows 7 upgrade advisor to check if your pc is compatible. Download upgrade advisor here.

Acer aspire 3680-2022 with vista is just too slow. Intel celeron M processor 420; 1.6 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, IMB L2 Cache; 80 GB HDD; 512MB DDR2; Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

More memory will make a difference. Vista is a memory hog and 512 is really not enough. You don't say what version of Vista you have but Microsoft say the min spec for Home Basic is 512MB, other flavours 1GB. Gety as much in as your mainboard will support - 2GB would be my minimum..

A Celeron 1.6 processor isn't going to be that fast if you are running a lot of apps and not much you can do about that (pretty unlikely you can upgrade; very few laptop mainboards let you).

There are a few tweaks you can make that may help but you (defrag, set Windows to better performance rather than better display, format and re-install) but stick some more memory in and see how you go.
