Question about HP Compaq Presario F761US Notebook

I have a Compaq Presario laptop with a broken

I have a Compaq Presario F761US laptop with a broken screen and am replacing it with a Dell Inspiron 15. The idea is to use the old laptop as a backup desktop (and it works ok with a Dell monitor). The question is now: how does one hook it up with a Gateway monitor from the cathode ray tube era? Both have VGA cable capability, and the Gateway monitors in the basement may be lacking pin 9. When I plugged one into the laptop, nothing showed on the screen; when I unplugged it, the screen showed that it was missing its signal. Plug in, the message disappears. Plug out, the message re-appears. Also, I am interested in hooking it up with tv sets, both old and new. The Dell monitor is one of the newer (?) flat screen models (label on back is hidden by plugs and hard to decipher) and the old Gateway monitor that showed a blank was a 500-069EV, built in January 1999. The other Gateway CRTs are even older Gateway2000s. All of the gateway cathode-rays have built in VGA cords with an apparent missing pin 9 (I think). The TV sets I am considering hooking up with are an early 2000s vintage RCA, a couple of Sony Trinitrons and a Sony Bravia flat screen.

Just plugging in the monitor to your VGA port on the laptop won't make it display. You have to toggle to the exteral display, or both. Usually you have to hold down your function key, and then hit the external display key. It could be F1 thru F8, depending on your laptop model. Mine is F6. If you toggle thru the modes, your CRT should display . The missing pin is no concern!

Thanks. Compaq Presario F761 US: When I hit the power button, it comes on for a split second. That's it. Help.........

I'll give you something to try :
using a bright light florescent ,lcd, etc. shine it right on the screen. Look in the center of the screen for the windows logo (might be barely visible).
If this is the case, you either have a bad inverter or the CCFL in your lcd panel is bad. If it is, re-post and we can walk you through troubleshooting or replacement.

I have a dell inspiron 6000 laptop..the bottom third of the display has lines in it and i cannot see the mouse..but if i hold the corner towards me it clears up, but as soon as i let go i happens again

the screen may be loose or broken. If loose, you'll need to tighten up the screws that hold the screen and the cover together. If the screen is broken, you'll need to replace it.

Compaq presario v2000 and dell inspiron 1501

here are teh steps from a toshiba laptop. I have acer and compaq laptops here with me and the process in both of them is very similiar, on both I would do pretty much exactly as it shows on those pictures.

the compaq one had a screw in the bottom that I had to unscrew on top of the other steps.

For the dell laptop you can get a service manual with step by step instructions from

after you have replaced the dell keyboard I think you will know and have enough expertice to replace the other brands keyboard also.
