SOURCE: Top load Whirlpool washing machine

Many Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washers use a 2 piece agitator. There are cogs called 'dogs' or 'dog ears' and a cam between the two halves of the agitator which can wear leading to a clicking/ticking sound and reduced movement of the top agitator section during the wash cycle leading to poor cleaning results. In most cases these worn parts can be replaced without much cost or difficulty. If you have this style of washer this should help.

SOURCE: Will not drain or spin

Unless you jarred the machine it's the timer. You can check this by bypassing the lid switch and seeing if it will cycle.

SOURCE: Whirlpool top Loading washing machine won't spin on spin cycle

If the washer won't finish a spin cycle, it probably means that your timer went bad or stalled. You can take the control panel off and look at the contacts for scorching or corrosion.

SOURCE: Whirlpool top loading washing machine doesn't spin

.I am not a repair professional. I am a 78 year old man
who has been making his own repairs for about 50 years. So the washer or dryer ID doesn't mean much to me. I came to fixya looking for a schematic for an really old AM/FM radio and found that more than 4,700 people were asking for help with a washer repair. I recently had a washer repair of my own and at that time I found an excellent video which showed me how to take my machine apart. This video made it possible for me to do my own repair. If you are repairing a dryer or a front load washer I suggest you go to where they have very good step by step trouble shooting and repair information on both washers and dryers as well as other appliances. If you have a direct drive top load washer and need help taking it apart this video is an early christmas present. I was so impressed with it that when I saw all these people needing help, I wanted to tell them about it. If you look at the back of your washer and the panel is solid (no small inspection plate to remove which would indicate you have a v-belt drive) chances are you have a direct drive and this video is just what you need. You can see it at You will probably still need help in determining what the trouble is and how to fix it. After viewing the video or if you have a v-belt drive rather than a direct drive, I suggest you go to where they have very good
trouble shooting and repair nformation on most
washers and dryers. I think you'll find what you need
there. Don't worry about the timer, they hardly ever
go bad. Good luck with it. If I have helped you, please rate my advice on fixya.

The unit was working filled up with water and then quit working. The LED's flicker but it doesnt turn on

It ispossible that the machine does not start off the cycle because there are errors possible failure of the controller unit. For the program to start up the main programcontroller must initiate the INLET/MOTOR/DRAIN pump/ valve to open up and allow each function to be driven starting fromthe flow of water into the drum as also the drain valve to open to exit thewater at the point of the program cycle. If this does not happen then thevoltage at the valve/motor/pump must be checked or the fault relates to novoltage from the controller. This meansthe controller is a suspect. If thewater flows though the inlet then the flow pressure should be good, if not theinlet valve is bad or there is dirt in the filter. Also check the flow at theinlet of the water line. Once the water comes into the system the WATER LEVELSENSOR - normally a pressure switch- must activate at the preset/chosen levelto give the signal to the program controller to switch on the motor. What ismost important for the motor to start functioning is that the door switch mustbe ON when the door is shut or this will be an error for starting the motor forrinse and wash.

Tub is filled with water and washing machine stops and does not rinse ~ can hear the motor humming but thats it....!

Hi just read your posting.Does the machine empty the water? If not the humming you hear is the pump.Bail some of the water by hand and the tip the machine back enough so you can look underneath the machine.Depending which model you should see a fan. This fan is part of your pump.Turn the fan clockwise and then anticlockwise a few times to loosen it and the put the machine back of its feet and select a spin cycle and push start. The machine should start to drain. Please reply on how you got on or if you do not have this style of pump or if the machine still does not drain. Please turn power off at the wall before touching the pump.Looking forward to your reply.

I cant get my washer to spin when it rinses?

Now if the machine is still full of water I need you to bail out some of the water by hand with a pot or bucket.Bail out just enough so you can look under the machine to the front right. You should see a pump with a red or black fan attached to it.If you see this pump try turning the fan clockwise and anticlockwise a few times to loosen it just in case it is jammed. Then put it back on its feet and select a spin cycle and push start.Hopefully it starts to drain. Please reply to tell me how you got on or if you have the pump with no fan attached.

Washing machine fills with water but will not go on to the wash cycle . The machine just fills with water and stops. Have to bail out the water by hand.

Your lid switch needs to be reset or replaced. Open the control console to access the lid switch. Check the fuse for continuity. Check the alignment of the lid switch for contact with the micro switch.
If these cannot be reset they must be replaced.

New Problem

remove drain pipe and make sure it is not blocked i had same problem And found money in the elbow of drain pipe blocking it up. when u r trying to turn by hand u are turning gearbox as well and is normally not easy to spin when they stop during a cycle

"If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:

If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.

If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it."
good luck

Whirlpol LSQ8243 Washer Stopped Working

My father had the same problem with same model about a year ago and it was the switch. If the machine continues to run up to the point of the spin cycle obviously the motor works and so he fixed the switch/timer that changes the cycle. In expensive but use a manual to guide you in reaching the switch and you will be able to manually turn the switch by hand observing that the spin cycle once reached times out or short circuits.

My machine quits working during the rince cycle

the safety switch could be the culprit on this because anytime you open the door on top it triggers which turns it all off. so what i would start with is either bypassing that switch or replacing it.

hi there,

the humming is the motor trying to turn, which means it works. since you did not mention any error messages, it could just be a belt that slipped off the pulley. have you taken it apart yet?

it definitely worth fixing.
