Question about Kenmore Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Something is wrong with the bobbin; the thread keeps catching and pulling out the part the bobbin drops into and I get an "E4 error" message. The manual says to call the service center and I'd rather fix it myself.

My bobbin thread breaks too much. How do I fix it.

Be sure you are using the correct bobbin for your machine. Even though it appears to fit the bobbin case, if it is the wrong bobbin, it could cause major headaches.

Try a different bobbin. Try different thread.

Also check that the bobbin thread is wound smoothly and turning the correct direction in the bobbin case. Make sure the thread is threaded through the bobbin tension properly.

AVOID old and inexpensive, bargain bin thread!

There could be a nick or burr somewhere that is catching the bobbin thread and breaking it.

Try loosening the bobbin tension a bit. It could be too tight, especially if the bobbin thread is pulling the upper thread down to the underside of the fabric.

There could also be something wrong with the bobbin case itself that may be resolved by trying a new bobbin case (or borrow one from a friend, etc.)

increase the needle thread tension up a bit as it is too loose to pull the bobbin thread up properly

How do I get the thread from the bobbin to the needle?

If your machine is functioning properly, when the needle goes down into the bobbin area, the needle thread will catch the bobbin thread in a loop. (If you gently pull the upper thread tail, you will be able to pull the bobbin loop up above the needle plate.) If your machine is not doing that, then there is something wrong. Make sure the needle is installed correctly and both threads are threaded properly.

How and Why to Bring up the Bobbin Thread

Why does my thread keep bunching up?

That is called "thread nesting," and several things can cause it. The upper thread enters the bobbin area during sewing, catches the bobbin thread, and as the needle goes up, pulls the stitch tight. Something is catching the upper thread as it goes around. The most common reasons are the bobbin or bobbin case (or both) is improperly inserted; the bobbin is warped (roll it down a flat surface--if it wobbles, it's warped), either the case or the bobbin is not seated evenly, there is a rough spot on the bobbin case that is catching the thread, or your bobbin is loosely/badly wound. You need to rule out the possibilities step by step until you find the cause. First, review your threading procedures from start to finish, using your user's manual. Then, without fabric, turn the hand wheel by hand (ALWAYS towards you) to see if you can see it start to catch. The top thread should rotate smoothly in the bobbin area. You should be able to pin-point the cause that way.

Bobbin is not catching thread

NOTE TO THE QUESTION. Bobbins do not catch thread. A hook underneath when you use the wheel to advance the machine will come and catch the under thread OR BOBBIN THREAD and pull it up.
Something common and I do it, wrong bobbin in the bottom thread. I have 2 sewing machines so put thread on both plastic and metal bobbins and then just grab the wrong machine bobbin.
If this is not the issue, take the machine apart and clean it well. Note the spots that you are to oil SPARINGLY.

How do I fix error E4 whe no thread is tangled?

try changing the needle
rethread the machine top and bobbin
try a different bobbin
make sure the bobbin is turned the right way in the bobbin case
clean under the needle plate and in the bobbin area for lint
also possible that something has gone wrong with the computer
part of the sewing machine.

Dear Wendy,

The E4, error message means the safety device is activated. Machine is locked up due to thread entangled with the bobbin case. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case. Check for any thread around the hook area. Also check your handwheel. It should turn freely. Good Luck

Error message E4

All sewing machines are 'picky' about being threaded correctly. As you seem to understand. There is no shame in asking the seller for help.
