Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

I have a Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener that will not open the door all the way. It will open a couple feet and then stops. The springs are fine and I have adjusted the "up" force setting. Is it possible the motor has gotten week and needs to be replaced?

Most likely your drive gear is going bad. Remove the cover and check it. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. Should be obvious if it is going bad. Double check your door springs. Sometimes they will look okay but one will be broken. It helps to watch them as the door opens.

The garage door seems to pick up speed the last two feet when closing then it automatically goes back up

Sounds like a spring tension problem. Best toi call a professional as retensioning the springs can be a source of serious personal injury.

Garage door moves few inches and stops, springs are fine, sensros are fine.

If it is not blinking when it stops, then the capacitor is blown. Replace the capacitor and it should resolve the problem.

Craftsman garage door opener problem

If you have eliminated the obstruction sensor, I would suggest a few things. Is the door spring set at the proper tension - usually check by releasing the door safety and manually closing/opening the door. It should balance about halfway up/down. Openers have limit switches for travel, if one is incorrectly positioned or faulty, it can cause similar issues. Openers have torque limit controls, if the motor thinks it is working too hard it will stop. Is the door greased and moving freely when you manually tested it for the spring tension? Are the gear sprockets firm and greased?

Have a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener, been working fine. Now when you start it you hear the motor running as normal but the chain doesnt move?

You must ensure the drive chain is engaged to the door puller.
Sometimes the emergency release if pulled (red cord) the drive and the coupling come separated.
Make sure the pin is back in place (pull release cord and make sure pin springs back in).
The run an open close cycle, it should pick up the drive again.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage opener opens only 6 inches

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It may be stripped. Take a close look at those door springs. They can sometime appear to be okay when one is broken.

Door openly opens 5-6 in, then stops.

If the door isn't unusually heavy when you open it manually then maybe an adjustment will help. On the back of the motor unit you will find the 'up force' control. Increase it 1/4 turn and try.

Chamberline 1/2 hp belt drive opener that stops opening

It sure sounds like a broken spring. Sometimes the break can be difficult to see. How heavy is the door to lift manually. This will give you a good idea.
