One speaker channel will not work - going from intermittent to completely dead.
It is possible that the speaker that is intermittent is causing the problem. Try disconnecting the speaker and see if the unit stays on and plays on all other channels. If it does, then try connecting one of the other speakers into that speaker jack and see if it still plays ok. If it does, that speaker is causing a problem. If the unit still does not operate properly after disconnecting the intermittent speaker or with a different speaker connected, the problem is most likely in the receiver.
When you say it is completely dead, does that mean that after you turn the receiver on, it shuts itself back off in just a few seconds? That is the "protect" mode of the receiver. It most likely has a bad output channel in the receiver and would not be anything you could fix yourself unless you are very good with soldering and checking electronic components.
I work at a Denon authorized service center and repair between 5 to 10 Denon receivers a week. The process of fixing them is not an easy one and is not a good idea to try and do unless you have the proper training and tools. But if you are wanting to try it yourself, I could be some help for you. I would need to know the model number, probably an AVR-????
I have the schematics and part numbers available for you if you need them.
Any extra information as to how the receiver is acting would also be helpful.
Since most Denon receivers are very good and on the expensive side, they are worth fixing. A bad channel normally runs about $150 to fix, but it does depend on exactly what is wrong with it. They are never just one part that is bad, it is usually about 5 to 10 parts that must be replaced. That is why it is important to be able to check the components properly, if you miss one bad part and then turn it on, you will usually destroy the parts that were just replaced.
Let me know if you need any help or advice on how to determain the exact problem. It will require more detail.
