Freezer drain line keeps freezing over

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator (approximately 6 years old) in which the freezer drain line freezes over regularly. This results in moisture draining through the overflow holes and into the refrigerator below. If I thaw out the drain, it will freeze closed within a day. I have shut off the ice maker supply line in hopes that this would cut down on a possible source of water, but the drain still freezes over. Any suggestions on what is causing the drain line to freeze and how to prevent this?

Good day,
Whirpool machines have a very short defrost cycle, as compaired to many brands. This definitely contributes to the problem.
1. Make sure the drain fittings and drain hose to the drain pan are completely open. Not just open, but blown free of any debrise.
2. My experience with many whirlpool products, is ice built up under and back of the drain pan in the freezer compartment. It cannot be seen.
To solve this problem long term, means unplugging the machine, defrosting, and drying it out completely.
24 hours and idealy with a floor fan blowing into the compartment.
3. As well, you wil notice a small round disk clipped to the top of the evaporator. This is the defrost thermostat, and controls the temperature during defrost.
I change and bump this tstat up 5 degrees.
For example, if it's a 50 degree tstat, I replace it with a 55 degree. Or if it's 55 degrees I use a 60 degree model.
You will not be able to buy this as a Whirlpool item, but you can with a little effort, use a GE kit.

The part number for GE replacement kits are for example "WR50X55", the last 2 numbers are the temperature of that tstat, and run in 5 degree increments from 45 degrees to 60 degrees.

A sharp appliance parts house counterman should be able to help you.

P.S. The tstat in Whirlpools are often given in Celsius.
You'll have to convert that to farenheit
Patience in drying the machine is your friend here.
Jack..

Whirlpool runs, but freezer not freezing and frig not freezing

If the compressor is running but the unit is not cooling you may have lost the refrigerant.  See if the condenser coils at the back or bottom are hot.  If they are only warm then the refrigerant is low and can be recharged.  Service tech should check for leak in coolant system.

Hollow ice cubes and refrigerator freezer drip pan is freezing

The drain at the bottom of the evaporator on the freezer rear wall is blocked up. Ice may have gotten so far up the side of the evaporator that it is blocking a return air duct which is located there. You need to completely deice the freezer and then **** out and purge the drain hole on the bottom of the evapotrator with hot water and a turkey baster.

Refrigerator water condensation drain line freezing

GO TO THE FREEZER PORTION OF THE FRIG.YOU NEED TO TAKE THE ICEMAKER OUT AND REMOVE THE BACK PANEL WHERE THE EVAPORATER FAN IS .RIGHT UNDER THE COIL YOU WILL SEE A DRAIN ,WHEN YOUR FREEZER GOES ON DEFROST THE WATER GOES DOWN THE DRAIN AND INTO A PAN THAT SITS ON TOP OF THE COMPRESSOR.THE HEAT FROM THE COMPRESSOR EVAPORATES THE WATER.THE DRAIN IN THE FREEZER IS PROBABLY CLOGGED OR FROZEN OVER WITH ICE AND THATS WHY THE WATER IS GOING ELSEWARE.REMOVE ALL THE ICE FROM AROUND THE DRAIN.IF THERES A ROD THAT GOES DOWN THE DRAIN FROM THE DEFROST ELEMENT THATS SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE DRAIN FROM ICING UP ,IN ANY CASE THE DRAIN IS CLOGGED OR ICED UP.UNCLOG THE GRAIN AND YOU WILL BE GOOD TO GO.

You have a partially plugged drain, causing water to flow too slowly. Try reaming out the drain with a long stiff wire until water flows thru it like a faucet. You may have to unplug the unit for a day to get every part warm enough. Hope this helps!

Defrost drain is freezing up

That drain in bottom of freezer need to be perfectly clean with no debris around. Then you have to thoroughly clean and snake out the drain line that goes down to the tray for the evaporation of the condensate. If it goes into fridge and there is another drain there same procedure must be done.
