Enter the bios either F1 or F2 for setup, on 1st page you will see processor, memory etc. It will say hard drive; if it says 'not installed' maybe it is sata like the previous post suggested.
Your has to be ide sometimes ide/sata is ok
If you have real win xp pro disc w a product key, place that in your cd rom, close tray and shutdown laptop. Turn it on and go into bios setup where you saw 2.0 ghz.,' hard drive not installed' etc.
press the alt key and still holding it down, press the P or p key
You will be on the next page of bios setup
You will now change the boot order, put the cdrom as the first device(read notes in bios how to move drive up or down in order);
put internal harddrive as # 2 device, then floppy or whatever as #3
then when you have cr drom first, hard drive as #2, press escape button, save changes and exit and your laptop should now boot from the cd rom(it will say press any key to boot from cd, make sure you do that rt way, and see if you can get into windows setup this way)
if it still says 'setup cannot continue, no hard drive found', you have the wrong type for your laptop
Make sure you delete all partitions completely when doing win xp os install. Do not attempt repair option, it will not work properly.
See if this helps, I have used these steps myself from a hard drive removed from a t30 ibm thinkpad(it worked for me)
Feel free to post if you need any help w dell c640 laptop(I use those laptops and have much knowledge of software and hardware issues w dell c640 laptop.)

Hmm , also may be because of the size of the hard disk , make sure your os support large hard disk size , if that is sata , make it as legacy in BIOS , some times it may solve the problem . I sujjest you please post more info

Hello,
It failed to install because most laptops come with their own OS. What is the brand and model name of your laptop??

My lappy hard disk is giving status that hard disk failure try to install in other location. then i connected it to my pc to take backup

Not sure I understand your Question... or maybe you are making a statement? But, it sounds like your hard drive (HD) is dead, no good , non useable... So what are your options? Purchase another hard drive, you should have received system backup disk or install disk with your laptop , you can use them to reinstall the operating system (OS) Windows on the new hard drive. There is a slight possibility you could try them (the install disk) to re-install your OS on your original HD, but again it sounds like your HD is dead.

If you have never made a back up of you hard Drive, then all your data (pic, documents, game, contacts) are lost. The problem most people don't understand is if the hard drive crashes for physical reasons, the spring breaks inside, or a diode burns out, then the data on the disk are lost.

You may also take your laptop to a computer repair shop near you and they can tell you more about your options.

When I start the laptop (HP HDX 16) I get this messege: Boot device not found Error codes Hard Disk-(3F0) pleas install an operating system on your hard disk. F2 system diagnostic. but it does not install...

The Windows edition listed in BIOS (Vista) is referring to the operating system that came with the computer. BIOS's System Diagnostics will always say the OS is Vista, because that is the original OS that HP put on the system. BIOS itself, however, cannot detect an operating system on the new Hard Drive because there is no operating system. In order to get an operating system, you have a couple options:

Depending on the terms and length of your warranty, you may be able to get HP to reinstall the operating system back onto the new Hard Drive. The amount you would pay depends on the warranty. Many warranties, however, become void when you change physical components in the computer (especially with laptops). If this is the case, you will have to try the next option.
You can buy a retail copy of Windows either online or from an electronics store. The price will depend on what edition you purchase, but it will probably cost you at least $100 US.
You can install a Linux operating system on your Hard Drive. If you've never heard of Linux, it is an operating system based on much of the same code as Mac operating systems, but has a more "Windows-like" feel to it. Linux operating systems are NOT the same as windows, and some programs that work in Windows will not work in Linux; you would need to find the Linux counterpart for these programs. One of the best things about Linux operating systems are that they are absolutely free to download, install and use. A very popular and stable Linux operating system is Ubuntu, which can be found at: http://www.ubuntu.com/

No , You must have the drivers of Acer or the hard disk driver software to be put into the laptop to work.
If not try to search for one in the web for free downloads.

Operating system not found media test failure will not reboot aspire 3680

Installing an operating system from one computer and inserting it into another computer will not work specially when they are from different manufacturers because the components in them are different.
The Windows install has to be done on the intended computer.
The media test failure error message refers to a faulty disk controller or a faulty hard disk.

Laptop System Recovery

Some way you have lost your operating system. The way to get your computer back up and running is locate your system restore disks. You can use these to reinstall your operating system. The first disk you will probably use is the OS disk itself. You can install your operating system with this disk. If you do not have the restore disks, you can either contact your computer manufacturer and request them, or you can just purchase the Operating System disk, which is kind of pricey, and reinstall the OS with that. Once you have gotten your hard drive reformatted, and your OS reinstalled, you will have to go to your manufacturer's website and download all the drivers that pertain to your specific computer.

Laptop hard drive

You can restore your computer to its original glory (once a new Hard Disk Drive is installed) using the original Operating System (OS) disk that came with the computer (applicable to Gateway, Toshiba, Dell laptops; other brands make you "burn" a copy on your own). I call this the "oops disk" because it restores the computer software back to factory default. If you got the laptop second hand or don't remember which buried box in the asthmatic attic has those old CD/DVD's - then you can do one of the following:
A. Contact the manufacturer to obtain a new set of "Restore" or "Recovery" disk(s). They will charge small Fee + Ship/Handling. [Tell "Sylvester" from Bangladesh "Hello!"]
B. Purchase a legal copy of an operating system (XP or Vista) from a local retailer (such as Best Buy) and install it [or hire a Geek Squad Agent to install it for you - much faster, less headache!]
C. Grab opportunity by the horns and steer into a fun project of installing an open-source (free) Linux-based OS such as Ubuntu or similar. [Happy learning!]
D. RECYCLE the computer and buy a brand new one, complete with operating system and manufacturer's warranty. ["OOOO, VISTA!"]
In ascending order of cost: C, A, B, D
In ascending order of time-investment and learning: D, A, B, C

HINT: if any or all of this solution sounds remotely confusing (e.g, you don't know how to install a HDD, etc) - hire someone to do it. I don't change my own oil because it's messy and less convenient. So, please support your local Geek Squad Agent and enjoy your free time!
