Thank you. The only roller I can see is a white notched plastic wheel on the left side (looking in from the front) of the space where the paper tray goes and where the jammed paper is. I cannot turn that wheel, if that is the roller to which you are referring. If not, please advise the location of the roller you are referencing.

I am not a repair person and I do not have special tools such as rubber-tipped tongs or forceps.

Is there not a way to release the pressure holding the paper?
Thank you again for your assistance.

I'm sorry, I guess I'm not making myself clear.

The paper is jammed in the very bottom of the machine. Looking in the paper tray slot, I can see the very top of the page near the rear of the machine (I can also see the top of the paper from the rear, but cannot grab it), and the bottom of the piece of paper showing towards the front, from where I am looking. The paper is under a thin flat panel which on the left (looking from the front of the machine). Please see attached photo.

    Brother MFC-9840CDW
    Message is "JAM DUPLEX"
Paper jammed in very bottom under flat plate. Cannot pull from front or back
    Still prints one-sided sometimes
    Thank you for your help.

Hi,NinaE, thanks for your quick reply.

I have already done all of that. This paper is not retrievable that way. There is nothing the the manual that addresses paper being stuck in this place. Please see attached photo, taken from the front of the machine. As you can see, the paper (now partially torn) is really at the very bottom of the printer (not at any of the places discussed in the user manual), under the flat gray plate. I cannot reach to pull it from the rear, either.

Thank you for helping. This printer is not one to just pick up and put in one's trunk, and I am trying to avoid calling for a repair person to come!!

Hello, Alva.

Here's some help from Brother support (note steps 5 and 6):

1. Pull paper tray 1 completely out of the machine
2. Remove any jammed paper inside the machine. If you do not see any paper jammed inside the machine, check the underside (bottom) of the paper tray for any jammed paper and remove it.
3. Next, turn the Brother machine around with the back of the machine facing you.
4. Open the back cover.
Note: After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the machine.
5. Pull down the two green levers, one on the left-hand-side and one on the right-hand-side and then fold down the black plastic fuser cover (located between the two green levers).
6. Using both hands, gently remove any jammed paper by pulling the paper out of the fuser unit.
7. Close the fuser cover and lift the two green levers.
8. Close the back cover.
9. Turn the Brother machine back around with the front of the machine facing you.
10. The machine will attempt to print the document that jammed.
NOTE: Verify the paper you are using meets the recommended specifications, because this can cause paper jams

Try releasing the levers for the MP tray and front door as described here:

    1. Remove the paper from the MP Tray.

    2. Remove any jammed paper from in and around the MP tray and close the MP
    Tray..

    3. Open the front door and look for and remove any paper jammed inside the
    machine.

    4. Close the front door and open the MP Tray.

    5. In the middle of the MP Tray you will see a grey round cover/roller. On
the left side of the roller you should see a black lever. Make sure you can push
the black lever back and then release it. The lever shouldcome forward/down to
    it's original position.

    Try this:

Press the cover release lever to open the front door.

Once the front door is opened, look for a black roller on the front door
    that has a split.

After locating the black roller, look for a black lever in the area below
the split. The lever should be sticking up.

Push the black lever in and then release it. The lever should go back to
    its original position

Alva,
Try and roll the roller that move the paper ahead. Rotate the roller in opposite direction so as to move the paper backwards. Do not pull the paper as if tears then that would be a bigger problem. try and use a tong with soft ends so as not to tear the paper. You have a long battle ahead as you have to go slow and steady. Move the roller with one hand and pull the paper with the other. Not pull exactly but just support it.

OK. I am referring to the rollers that initially pull the paper inside and move it forwards. Just ahead of the paper tray. What you can do is that you remove whatever you can like the toner cartridge etc after opening up the top and reach as deep inside as you can. You may reach the paper.

Paper jam printer 3524

Clear the jammed paper as follows.

If the jammed paper is removed completely by using the information in the following steps, you can install the paper tray first, and then close the front cover and the printer will resume printing automatically.

If the printer does not start printing automatically, press the Go button. If the printer still does not start printing, please check that all the remaining jammed paper has been removed from the printer. Then try printing again.

Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer.

Pull the jammed paper up and out of the printer.

Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.

Pull out the drum unit assembly. Pull the jammed paper up and out of the printer. If you cannot remove the drum unit assembly easily at this time, do not use extra force. Instead, pull the edge of the jammed paper from the paper tray. If the jammed paper can not be pulled out easily, turn the jam dial towards you as you gently pull the paper out.

Open the face-up output tray. Pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. If the paper jam can be cleared, go to Step 7.

Open the jam clear cover. Pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit.

Close the jam clear cover. Close the face-up output tray. If the paper jam still cannot be cleared, for HL-5130 and HL-5140 users go to Step 10, and for all other users go to the next step.

Pull the Duplex Tray completly out of the printer.

Pull the jammed paper out of the printer or the Duplex tray. Put the Duplex tray back into the printer.

Push the lock lever down and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit assembly. Take out the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit.
Put the toner cartridge into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in properly, the lock lever will lift automatically.

Put the drum unit assembly back in the printer.

Put the paper tray in the printer.

Close the front cover.

Machine diplays "paper jammed" with no paper in

Hello
This the method to clear paper jam, follow these steps:-
Turn the printer off and on to see if it can automatically clear some or all of the jam. Many printers provide an error-code listing on the front panel display for the area where the jam occurred. If your printer shows an error code, be sure and check the printer manual to see if that identifies the area of the printer where the jam occurred.
Turn off the printer.
Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper.
Open any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the ink cartridge. 5 If necessary, remove the ink cartridge. Place it in a bag or away from light to avoid damaging it.
If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly. The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam.
If the paper does tear, try rotating the roller gears manually to free the paper. Don't force anything, though.
Replace the ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on.
If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Reinspect the paper path.
Good Luck

Lexmark t640: paper jam in the back door. I can see the edge of the paper. How do I release the tension on the rollers so I can slide it out? Now it is in there tight and to grab it just tears off a piece...

Hope this helps....
Explanation of the paper jam message

A 241.09 Paper Jam message indicates that the printer thinks a sheet of paper has jammed at the front of the printer. The jammed sheet of paper is most likely to be found in one of the paper trays or under the toner cartridge.
NOTE: If you select Show areas on the operator panel, you can view one or more images to help you locate and clear the jam.

Clearing the jam
To resolve the paper jam message, you must first clear the entire paper path. To access the jam area, you will need to open one or more of the paper trays. Follow the steps in the table below to help you locate and clear the jam.
Step Action Image 1 Open the printer paper tray (tray 1), and remove any jammed media you find there. pattlnk_10222007_1922-enus28872_24109paperjam1_t64x_en_us.gif 2 Open the front cover and remove the toner cartridge. Examine the area inside the printer and remove any jammed media you find there. pattlnk_10242007_159-enus28872_24109paperjam5_t64x_en_us.gif 3 If you have a duplex option installed, also remove the duplex access tray and remove any jammed media you find there. pattlnk_10302007_1559-enus28860_24x17paperjamduplex_t64x_en_us.gif 4 If you were printing from an optional paper tray, such as tray 2 or tray 3, open any optional trays, starting at the top, and remove any jammed media. Pull the print media either up or down. If it does not pull easily one way, try the other way pattlnk_10222007_1957-enus28872_24109paperjam3_t64x_en_us.gif 5 If you are printing from an optional 2000-sheet feeder, open the front door. Press the elevator button (A) to lower the tray. Remove any partially fed media from the feeder.
NOTE: Make sure the stack of print media is straight and pushed all of the way into the feeder. Incorrectly loaded paper is the most common cause of paper jams from a 2000-sheet feeder option.
pattlnk_10222007_2110-enus28872_24109paperjam4_t64x_en_us.gif
For a larger image, click here. 6 Finally, reinstall all of the paper trays and press the pattlnk_10222007_2117-select_button.jpg button to try printing again.
NOTE: You may receive a different paper jam message informing you that another sheet of paper is jammed elsewhere in the printer. If this occurs, the error code will indicate the location. Click here for a diagram showing the error code locations. The paper path will vary, depending on the paper source and number of paper feed options installed.
Remove any jammed sheets of paper you find and try printing again.
