Question about Maytag Neptune MDE5500AY Electric Dryer

2 Answers

This is the 3rd time I have had this problem, my Neptune sensor touch pad dryer will not start, it reads 8.8 on the display. If I unplug the unit so that only one side has power (110), when you open the door the interior light will come on and the display will show 50 minutes / you can press the pad which will change the settings. Upon closing the door the display goes blank - no lights. The last two times I had this problem the top panel and circuit board had to be replaced at a cost of $240.00. In fact my washer of the same match has had it's panel replaced twice at the same cost. Is there a defect with this line of product?? Other friends who have the same units have had the same problem and have gotten rid of them. Instead of replacing the panel and circuit board is there a simple solution to what it is, is the repairmen actually correct in replacing the whole unit or can it be fixed.

We have the same Maytag Dryer MDE5500AYW and after reading a few posts of possible fixes--Turn Power Off them back On to reset---Replace Control Board-- Then I saw APPLY HEAT to the panel control area AND IT WORKS. I put a small heater on the dryer top in front of the Control Board Panel Readout and after it warmed up the 88 went out and when I pushed Start It Works.

I think that cold weather has something to do with the problem. In Dallas it is 42 degrees outside and 70 degrees inside But the dryer vent is connected through the outside insulated brick wall and the cold air coming forom the outside vent makes the inside of the dryer COLD until the dryer is in operation.

Long story short--I will keep the heater handy in case It is needed until the weather warms up.

Mine having the same problem, display of 88 and no responding. Using the hair dryer as other tip. It works like a champ for three times. Note that all of this 3 times were in Winter. For this 4th times, which is today, it's Summer. The outside temp is around 100 degree. However, it's still repairable with the hair dryer. I started to worry the thing is getting worse and worse.

We moved our neptune dryer to our new cottage and it needed a new hookup. It worked for a while-but now it reads 88 and won't work. Is it the dryer or the electrical?

When the 88 displays, put a heating pad over the display - it will be ready in just a few minutes. Sounds crazy, but it works every time. May take up to 30 or 40 min.

Problem with my maytag neptune mde7550 dryer will not go through any cycles by useing touch screen and will not switch off by touch screen

The only way possible to see if the touch pads are working is to test the voltage of the control pads when it contacts. The input of the Microprocessor should be checked for the pad control impulse to come in. If there is no trigger voltage to the mP this can be the control pad problem.
The mP must be checked for the working voltage and also the frequency oscillation at the crystal leads. If so the mP is working with a suspected control pads which are not able to set the program or timing.
There is no way but to remove the sticker pad and replace, One difficult way to have a chance is to remove the carbon sticker pads and check continuity , You can use a carbon pen to line the tracks so that the multi-meter reads a continuity. With this you can have a temporary fix

Start/pause button not working, is it the control panel or the control electronics board?

First unplug the Dryer and allow about 5 mins to pass, this will allow the board time to reset, plug Dryer back in, if problem is still present, its possible that the touch pad is defective on the dryer, if other functions work when touched, it is the touch pad, and not the Board

I have a 10 year old Maytag Nepture MDE5500ay with a membrane control panel. When I touch any button on the membrane it immediately indicates a 8.8. on the display. I have unpluged the machine and waited...

The 8 code generally means a stuck keypad which can only be resolved by replacement of the keypad.

The service manual at the link below will give you some guidance in section 9. Good Luck

If the display on the dryer reads '88' then place a heating pad over the display. After a few minutes, the '88' code will clear, and it will work fine. Sounds crazy, but works every time for me.
