Question about NetGear WNR2000 Wireless Router

1 Answer

Hooked up router to cable modem and PS3; all is fine. Wanted to hook up my G4 Mac laptop but when prompted to enter my password, my entry is rejected. "Authentication Required" window keeps popping up. do I now have to re-set the router back to default and re-do my set-up w/ the PS3? Then try laptop set-up again? Ps. the laptop wireless connection recognizes my SSID; it's the password entry seems to be the problem. I had changed the password from the default. thought I had done so correctly.

Hi,

If the routers defult user nme and password is not working then the only solution to fix this problem is to reset your router back to factory settings. You can do this by inserting paper clip into the hole(its a 1mm size hole) and then pressing the paper clip for 30 seconds.

After you reset the router you will have to reconfigure it with the help of your internet service provider as only they can give you the ip address and dns server details. After resetting your router just give them a call and tell them that you need to reconfigure your router to get internet.

After you are done you can login with the routers default password or change it again to something else.Just make sure you note down the password somewhere so that you can refer it in future if you forget.

Thank you for using fixya.

I want to secure my internet

  1. Follow these steps to configure Linksys WRT160N wireless router.

1.Open Internet Explorer, it does not matter if you see error message such as "The page can not be displayed" . now erase everything on the address bar and type in this IP address: 192.168.1.1 or the full address: http://192.168.1.1This is the default IP address for the router set by Linksys.
  2. 2 Hit the Enter key on your keyboard to connect to the router's web admin control panel. You will be prompted a login window for the username and password: the default admin username is "admin" and the default admin password is "password". If you can't connect to this admin control panel, you will need to change the IP address on your modem, maybe your modem is using the same IP 192.168.1.1 also, just unplug the router from your modem, and hook up your computer directly to the modem and fire up the web browser and enter the IP 192.168.1.1 and follow the on screen direction to get in.
  3. 3 It will then ask you to change password, then you make up a password that is meaningful for you to remember. You will need to write down the username and password for future reference because I am sure you will forget. You will need to reset the router if you forget the router password, and that will erase everything saved inside the router setting.
  4. 4 After successfully login, you will be in the Basic Setup of your Linksys WRT160 wireless router. You also might need to clone the Mac Address if you are using Cable Broadband (Comcast), to do this go to Mac address clone -> Enable, then clone my computers Mac.
  5. 5 If you are using Verizon, you might need to change the Internet Connection Type to PPPoE and enter your username and password that is created by Verizon.
  6. 6 I think many of you concern more on the Wireless secrutiy. Click the Wireless tab and enable the wireless security, you will need to choose a type of security encryption, WEP is weaker, you will need to type 10 characters for the pass code. The WPA or WPA2 is much stronger that it takes passphrase. For more security on wireless connection, you can also try to use MAC authentication, each of your laptop or wireless card has unique MAC address, you find out the MAC address on your laptop then enter it into your router so only this laptop can have access to the wireless connection.

Perhaps you turned on MAC address filtering in your router's wireless security settings? It's a pretty good security measure for not allowing unwanted visitors to try hooking up to your wireless internet connection, so it might have been recommended.
Go to your router's configuration and see if MAC filtering is turned on. If it is, you have to add your second computer's wireless card MAC address to the "allowed" list.
Your card's MAC address is sometimes written on it, but it's simpler to go to command prompt and type "ipconfig /all", which will show you details about all the network devices present in the system. Find the wireless card and note the MAC (physical) address. Note: in windows the address has a "-" dash as a separator, whereas normally a ":" colon is used as a separator and this is usually the way you have to enter it.

Router Won't connect to internet

The cable modem sometimes register the hardware MAC address of the connected device. So your PC may be registered and it won't accept the router now. Connect the WAN port of the router to your cable modem and power the modem off and on again. It should re-register the connected device and now your router should work.

I hope your internet is working fine when you are connected directly through modem . As of my views you need to configure your newly purchased router first. Connect your router , see to that all the connection are appropriate . Your modem enthernet cable should be connected to your router and your router to desktop in this is the ideal connection .

now follow these steps .

1. click on LAN . Select TCP/IP config
2 . Click On properties .
3 . check the box " automatically recieve settings . Click on Ok and close it .
4 . Now to go to ur router page open a web browser . in address column type your gate way . I. E. for most of routers it is 192.168.1.1
and press enter
5 . it will prompt you to password , Your USER NAME AND PASSWORD is ADMIN .
6. in basic setup . Select AUTOMATIC DHCP ,
7. change your IP address to 192.168.1.10
8. save the settings and reboot .
9 . restart your system .
10. Your INTERNET should work .

Cannot share my cable modem connection

You need to connect a router to the cable modem.  The router then gets an IP address from Comcast and provides a gateway between the computers connected to the router.
The modem expects to communicate with a single Ethernet device, and provides an IP address to the first device that provides a piece of data called a MAC address.  By placing a router in-between, the router gets the IP address that lets you communicate on the Internet.  It provides local IP addresses to the equipment connected to the local Ethernet and "routes" those to the Internet.  You can either hook your two devices into the router if it has enough ports, or hook you switch to the router and hook your PC and PS3 into the switch.

Setting up the BEFVP41 Router with a Cable Modem and a Dynamic IP Address

Connecting the Router and the Modem 1. Connect the Broadband modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable without the router installed and make sure that the Internet connection is active. If it is not, contact your Internet Service Provider. 2. Shut down the computer, and unplug the power cables to both the router and the Broadband modem. 3. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the computer and plug it into the Internet or WAN port of the router. 4. Take the Ethernet cable that came with the router (or any another available cable) and connect it to the computer. Then, take the other end of that same cable and connect it to Port 2 on the back of the router. 5. Plug in the Broadband modem's power cable and wait for all of its lights to stop blinking. 6. After the lights on the Broadband modem stop blinking, plug in the router's power cable. 7. Start up the computer. Obtaining the PC's MAC Address Windows 98SE/ME 1. Click on the Start menu, then click on the Run option. 2. When the ?Run? window opens, input winipcfg into the ?Open? field, then click on the OK button. 3.
