it has happened every time I have company for the past 3 month it resolves by shutting the fridge and defrosting it completely what should i do to resolve it for good? should I set the freezer at 5f instead of 0f in winter would that help???

Both of the other messages have it partly right. First, defrost the box completely. If you have access to the coils, use a hair dryer...but be careful of water/electricity as they don't mix well. If not, you'll have to turn it off and leave the doors open for at least one day to melt the ice inside. Dry what you can. Restart the box. Often, problems like this are a result of too many uncovered liquids, box set too cold, too much 'window shopping' or bad/dirty door gaskets. If the problem comes back, it will either be the defrost timer or low gas.

It's possible that the defrost system is not working properly and that the defrost thermostat is open or the defrost element is open. If these two parts test good then look for a defective timer or a stalled evaporator fan motor.

The top section, fridge, is freezing up, we only had it 3 days

Read somewhere that refrigerators are not supposed to be transported on their sides - that they are supposed to be moved in an upright position and that if you have transported it like that you are supposed to let it stand upright for about 8 hours before using it.

My kenmore 253 upright freezer/fridge is not cooling the fridge part correctly. It's cool but not cool enough to keep the food fresh. The freezer works well sometimes. And sometimes it seems that it's not...

Try this test. Set a window fan behind the fridge to constantly blow air across the lower coils at the floor. If the fridge works well after a while of this, then the lower fan on the fridge needs replaced. Sometimes though, after a while, the fan will finally start working again because the cycle has finally corrected itself with the test. Leave the window fan run on low for a few days before removing it. The hum you hear is the compressor moving the coolant and is supposed to do the hum sound. That's good. Now once the fridge is working, and you still have a good freezer section and not cool enough below in the fridge for you, there is a knob that sets the cool lower by opening flaps under the freezer to let more cold down to the fridge area. Set this knob to colder and the flaps will open more.

Fridge compartment is freezing in my Hoover upright fridge-freezer. Any advice greatfully recieved. Thanks, Owen

have you tried turning down the temperature for the freezer or fridge? The fridge gets its cold power from the freezer, it is siphoned into it. So turning down the freezer temp may help but a sensor may have gone bad in the motherboard of your freezer and not closing off the vent into your fridge

  • the defrost timer and bimetal thermostat have apparently both malfunctioned. (rare)
  • if someone has worked on it in the past they may have bypassed the  bimetal thermostat.
  •  the bimetal thermostat turns off the heater if it gets too hot (above 45 in the freezer)
  • and the defrost timer is only supposed to stay in defrost for 8 minutes or so.
  • so considering the heater was on and it was hot in the freezer is evidence of these two components not doing their job.
