Don't give up all hope yet! I'm not sure of your mac model, but there are replacement keyboards available for alot of the mac laptops. Some of the keyboards are replaced by changing the entire top panel, but it's still worth doing. You can save alot and maybe get this computer back into action.
If you're unfamiliar with disassembling your laptop, visit powerbookmedic (dot com) and you can download free instruction manuals to disassemble and put back together your laptop.

I spilled salad on my computer. Curser works, but clicking gets nothing

Need to know if it's a laptop or desktop. Was the food spilled onto the keyboard or into the CPU? If the spill occurred to a desktop (detachable) keyboard, simply buy a new or used keyboard. Not expensive. A laptop is more costly to fix - requires removal of case. You can always use an external keyboard with a laptop -just plug into USB port.
You may be able to clean an external keyboard by repeatedly pressing the various keys where the spill occurred. If all else fails, get some electrical contact cleaner from Radio Shack or Auto Zone, unplug the keyboard, and spray cleaner sparingly around the keys where the spill occurred. I would not spray a laptop - too much electronics to fry. After spraying again press the keys repeatedly. Replug and look for improvement. By the way, USB keyboards are cheap on Ebay or Caigslist. I get them for $10 each,

How exactly to clean your laptop

Cleaning laptop case Cleaning the exterior portion of the laptop case can help keep the laptop looking new. The exterior case of a laptop can be cleaned by using a damp cotton cloth that has been dampened with water. It is not recommended that the exterior case of the laptop be cleaned with household cleaning solutions. However, if there is a substance on the laptop that cannot be cleaned with water, we suggest using rubbing alcohol.
Cleaning case openings
If dust, dirt, hair, or other substances are in the case openings, it can prevent air from getting into or out of the laptop. This can cause the overall heat of the laptop to increase, and in some cases may also cause such issues as random reboots.
Look for laptop openings where the laptop draws in cool air from outside or blows out any hot air from the inside of the laptop. These openings are usually on one of the sides, the back, or the bottom of the laptop. Dust, dirt, hair, or other substances can almost always be removed easily using a cotton swab and/or compressed air.
Warning: If you're using compressed air to clean the openings that have fans within them, it's possible that the amount of air blown on the fans can cause them to over spin, damaging or destroying the fan. To help prevent this issue, place something in-between the fan blades, such as a toothpick.
Cleaning laptop keyboard
Like almost everything else on a laptop, a keyboard is also different from the standard computer keyboard. With many laptop keyboards the keys cannot be completely removed. Therefore, we suggest cleaning the keyboard by using the same damp cloth you used to clean the exterior case of the laptop. In addition, compressed air can be used to spray any dust, dirt, or hair from in-between the keys.
If you've spilt something onto the laptop keyboard (like a soda) that's causing the keys to stick and cleaning it does not help we suggest that you have the laptop repaired since the keyboard cannot be replaced.
Cleaning laptop mouse (touchpad)
Cleaning the laptop touchpad can help improve the look of the laptop and also many times will help improve the responsiveness of the touchpad. To clean the touchpad surface, use the same damp cloth used to clean the exterior of the laptop.
Cleaning LCD display
Additional information about cleaning LCD and flat panel displays can be found on our main cleaning page.
Cleaning internal laptop components
Cleaning the inside of a laptop computer can be a difficult task. However, in some situations, it may be necessary because of excessive dust and/or dirt buildup within the computer, such as on the processor's heatsink.
Unfortunately, however, because of the complexity often involved in disassembling the laptop to reach many of these areas, Computer Hope cannot provide this information online for every laptop ever made. If you believe after cleaning your computer that it is still overheating because of dust and/or dirt buildup, we suggest taking the laptop to an authorized repair center.

Hp G62 dead after spill

In most cases, you are in a position where you may need to return it to HP for repair.

There is one thing you can try, but it takes a very gentle hand and touch: use something like Fantastic, or a more eco-friendly spray solution. Gently spray the key board all over where the spill went, which
means probably the whole keyboard.

Let it sit a few minutes, then turn it upside down on paper towels and let it drain.

Then, gently spray it again with plain water and let it sit upside down on more paper towels. Allow it to drain for a long time, something like a day or more.

When you turn the laptop right side up, you may find the keyboard fully functional again. But there is no guarantee. This works mostly on keyboards attached to desktop computers, not integrated into laptops.

The concept is the same - cleanse the keyboard, flush it, and allow it plenty of time to dry. Remember, liquid and electricity, no matter how low voltage, like a keyboard, are not friendly. If you try to use it before it is completely dry, you can fry more than just the keyboard.

It's possible to help it along with a gentle application of a hair blower, but not until after the two cleanings, and at least a day upside down on paper towels.

Good luck.

Cheers!

The w key on my sony vaio laptop isn't working hen you press it, but w's constantly come out as if it is being held down

The keyboard is probably faulty and this is not generally a repairable item. Did you spill any liquid on it? If so, giving it a clean might help. Remove the keyboard from the laptop to make it easier and avoid possible damage to the laptop. Make sure the power is disconnected and the battery is removed before removing the keyboard.
If cleaning does not work then you will have to replace the keyboard.

Hi i i have a acer D260 Netbook and i spilled chicken stock on the keyboard and its not working what should i do?

Hi !

If the keyboard is damaged or some keys are not functioning well. It is not repairable, but the whole keyboard can be replace by new one. Try to find computer repair shops that install new keyboard for your laptop. Normally, they have keyboard part in every computer. Good Luck.

Keyboard not working due to a spillage over keys

Very possibly, yes. Usually the internal parts of RF keyboards are heavily customized and a shop would need to keep tons of parts for every different keyboard under the sun.

Also, replacement plus spares will often cost more than a new keyboard, so there's little advantage in repairing.

Depending on the spillage, sometimes you can repair the keyboard. RF keyboards are much more difficult to fix because the spillage may have shorted circuits or oxidised contacts and tracks.

But if you've nothing to lose, and especially if some keys are working (indicating that the transmitter electronics, the most delicate part, is still alive), then you can take apart the keyboard (screws underneath, and retainer clips too). Under the shell there are other screws holding the typing surface. Removing them, the back of the surface comes off, revealing a contact membrane and a wealth of printed curlicues.

Wipe the curlicues with a lint-free cloth and alcohol to remove coffee and sugary liquids. Inspect carefully for oxidation and rust; sometimes you can remove it with a pencil rubber. Spray with a contact enhancer spray such as DeoxIT.

The membrane is the tricky part: usually lukewarm water or alcohol will do, but it depends on the formulation of the contact pads (usually black round thingies). Sometimes you can see which pads have been affected by the spillage and clean them with a cotton swab.

With RF keyboards priced around US$ 30, frankly I'd do that only for the fun of it.

Several keys on keyboard not working - Acer AspireOne

If you have warranty they can fix it for you, but if not, you can take the laptop apart, and clean the contacts of the keyboard youself. Which would be the same thing they would do ("they" the warranty people). But is not sure, you can take it to a repair shop for inspection.

My laptop

I'll start by telling you that most of the time keyboards don't recover from a spill. With that said, clean it by using a 50/50 rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Remove the keyboard from the machine, and spray the alcohol into the keyboard generously. Shake out the excess or blow it out with air, then use paper towels to daub up the rest. Repeat this process two or three times, then let the keyboard dry for a good 24 hours. While you have the keyboard off check for any juice or sticky areas in the machine, and clean them with the alcohol and Q-tips. Let this dry well also. After drying put the keyboard back on and try it. If you notice any sticky keys after using it for a while, then take the sticky keys off and clean them individually with the alcohol and Q-tips.
