Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have been using Outlook express for years. It is where my e-mail address list is maintained. Today I am experiencing a problem that I do not understand. I was frightened when I opened Outlook express, and the opened the address book. There were no addresses in it. NONE. It was considerable panic fir quite a while, as I have never figured out how to back up the addresses. When trying to find out if the list wasn't still there somewhere, I looked many places without result. THen I went to All Programs>Accessories>Address Book. The window that opens lokks exactly like the one that opens from within Outlook Express (when I click on the "Addresses" icon. With one major difference. All of my addresses are still there. Why does this same address book opened from within Outloook express (or outlook) show no addresses at all? How can I get them to show again from the Outlook Express Address Window?

    Wayne,
Thanks for the note. Things are continuing to go down hill. In preparation to do as you suggested, (Import the "good" address book) I tried to find out where it was. So I opened all programs>accessories> and then rightclicked and checked properties on Address book. It said that the target was in Documents/Outlook Express/wab.exe So I tried to open Outlook (as you suggested) to import this file. The dialog screen was looking for a .wab file and would not allow me to select the wab.exe file.
I then decided to check one more time. ANd actually went to All Program>accessories> and clicked on Address Book. When it opened up this time it was empty. NO addresses. Just as it had done before in Outlook express.
I want to believe that the addresses are still there somewhere. I did a search for .wab files. And indeed come up with somehting called the Default Address book. BUt it was an old version of my address book from years ago, that is next to useless.
Do you have any ideas to help me look for my address book? I have spent the last few months building this address book as we changed out newsletter from snail mail to e-mail. There are thousands of adddresses perhaps, but most important to me is the groups that I had developed for e-mailing our newsletter. Please help.
    Ed

If you get this but didn't get my first reply to you, please let me know. I did send further questions, and hit submit, but there is nothing in the interface that tells me that my message to you was actually sent.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Wayne thanks for the help. I did just find the correct and (thankfully) still complete address book. It was in Application Data>Microsoft>Address Book folder. There was the (myname).wab file. And it was complete. So I followed your original advice, and imported back into Outlook Express. I kinda hope I never have oportunity to learn why it disappeared the first time. But I am GREATLY releived to have it back. Thanks for your help.
I did imediately make a backup (export) of the address book.
    Gratefully,
    Ed

BY the way you mention that you do not know where in the world people are. Although I come from Michigan/Minnesota I am currently in Indonesia, where I have lived for years, working with the church.
    Again,
    Thank You

Hello,

Not sure why it disappeared, but you can open Outlook Express, and select File>Import>Address Book and when the window opens, direct it to your good Address Book.

If you are not sure where it is located do a Search prior to trying to import it. Also, make sure you import the actual Address Book and not a shortcut. When you find the file, simply place your cursor over the file and it should say "Address Book File".

That should get you back in business. Any problems, just Comment back.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Hi Ed. Yeah, I don't monitor this all the time. Never know when people post and go to bed, or where in the world they are.

I would try a couple things here if the only .wab file found is an old one. (Strange by the way. You haven't done a system restore have you?)

    1) Reboot your computer. If that doesn't get it.

    2) Try doing a System Restore back to a day you know it was there.

I will be researching this a little more in the meantime.

Glad you have it back. I was going to suggest you back it up. You could also just drag and drop the file to a flash drive.

If you are satisfied with the solution, please click the Accept button.

Wow! Indonesia. I am in West Virginia...northern panhandle...40 miles from Pittsburgh, PA.

Take care, and God bless the work there.

In Outlook, you can use the Import and Export Wizard as the interface for Address Book conversion. To convert a WAB file, follow these steps: 1. Start Outlook if it is not currently running. 2. On the File menu, click Import and Export. 3. Select Import Internet Mail and Addresses, and then click Next. 4. Select Outlook Express 4.x, 5 from the list, and then click Next. 5. Select the product for which you wish to convert items from the list, and then click Next. 6. Select any combination of the Mail or Addresses from the items listed.

NOTE: With the exception of rules conversion from Outlook Express, the steps to convert addresses is the same. 7. Click Next. 8. Select a destination for the imported address data. The destination depends on the type of Outlook installation you selected initially. a. The Internet Mail Only installation of Outlook 98 allows only the Contacts folder as the destination. b. The Corporate or Workgroup option allows the options of Personal Address Book or Outlook Contacts. 9. Select the appropriate duplicate items option. Click Finish to complete the import.
Hope that helps..........

Cannot receive email.

If you can send but cannot receive:

Step1: Double Check your Incoming Mail (POP3) settings.

To Double Check your Outlook/Outlook Express Settings:
  • - Open Outlook/Outlook Express
  • - Click on Tools -> Accounts
  • - Click on Mail tab - you'll see the list of email accounts that are set-up
  • - to view info and settings for each email account, double click on an email account.
  • - Click (highlight) the extra or duplicate email accounts that you are not using and click on Remove button (on the right)
  • - Click on General tab, Servers tab, Advanced tab, accordingly and check your Outlook settings against the following examples:
Step2: A common mistake: For Servers setting (Servers tab), -> Account Name make sure that you use the full email address and not just the first part of the email address - for example: janedoe@comentum.com and not just "janedoe"
  • - Login to your Web Mail and Delete any suspicious email that can block your Mailbox. (emails that have no "From" or corrupted spam emails can cause Outlook/Outlook Express to hang.

I can recieve an E Mail But can not send one

Which is ur e-mail client i.e. r u using outlook express or windows mail or windows live mail in order to send & receive emails from ur e-mail Id????
If yes then i think u might not have set the correct address of the SMTP server of ur mail client while configuring windows mail or outlook express or windows live mail on ur notebook-->SMTP server enables u to send e-mails-->anyways follow these steps to set the correct SMTP server address:
open the outlook express or windows mail or windows live mail-->Click on 'tools' option-->then click on the option 'accounts'-->a window will open with a list of accounts or only one account depending on the number of accounts u have configured with outlook express-->select the account from which u can receive mail but cant send one-->if u r not sure which account it is then most likely it would be the default one-->After selecting the particular account click on 'properties'-->properties window will open up-->select the 'servers' tab-->under 'server information' u will find 'outgoing mail(SMTP)'-->fill the proper address of the SMTP-->u will find the proper address of the SMTP server thru google also ensure that u have selected the 'My server requires authentication' checkbox on the 'servers' tab itself-->if u r using gmail then search for the SMTP address of gmail in google & same for the others also such as yahoo, rediff etc.
