Question about GE Refrigerators

Open Question

RE: Fridgidaire Model FRT21IL6JW refridgerator/freezer. I recently purchased a new auxilliary refriderator/freezer to use in my car garage. It does not freeze the food in freezer compartment. Service technician says that new refridgerators will not function in cold environment of garage if outside ambient temperature in garage drops below 40 degrees F . He states that a heater element must be added into the freezer thermostat control to sense when the ambient temperature in the garage drops below 40 degrees F. Can you explain this anomaly to me. My previous refridgerator worked fine in my garage. Is this a new environment issue. Lee C. Capell, Winston-Salem, NC

This is a new one for me, I have never heard of a heating element being added into a thermostat, but I will research this. An easy way to make sure that this is not a system or thermostat problem is just to move your refer into your heated house for a few days and see if you still have a problem. SOURCE: water drains from freezer compartment into refridgerator

If the freezer is on top then empty out the freezer and remove the bottom and back liner of the freezer compartment usually phillips screws. In the back you will see the freezer coils along with a defrost element. Below these two items u will see a drip tray that collects water from the coils on defrost cycle, in the center of the pan will be a drain hole that connects to a hose that leads to a pan under the refrigerator.Normally the water is collected there and evaporated. The hole in the tray in the freezer is clogged. Thaw it and clean it until you can pour water in it and it goes to the pan down below. please rate me

Sounds like a faulty thermostat. Try replacing it with a known good one and retest.

SOURCE: IFrost Free Sharp Refridgerator & Freezer-Fridge not keeping cold

You have a defrost problem. You need either the defrost timer, defrost heater, or the defrost bi-metal. If you have a meter you can ohm out the heater and the bi-metal ( as lonh a s the bi -metal is frozen as it opens when it gets warm to cut out the defrost heater) if you have an ohm reading on either one of the two the replace the defrost timer, if you don't then replace the part that has no ohm reading.

SOURCE: Refridgerator is warm, freezer is freezing

Defrost problem. Most likely the defrost heater or defrost thermostat.

Its a two person job. One person has to looses up the two hidges holding the door just slightly while the other person holds the door in place. Once in place tighten the screw/bolts for the hidges back up and check. If not aligned, redo it again until it is aligned and seals properly..

Whirlpool Freezer doesn't freeze?

insulated or not, garages are generally too cold for new energy efficient frigs to operate. ambient temp needs to be above 60 to work efficiently.
