Thanks.....but can you tell me where the tuner section is and how to fix it? I have read before that the solder joints may be faulty and I bought a cold heat soldering gun and electical solder but have been leery of taking the back off of the tv and trying to repair it.

However, it is almost impossible anymore to find a tv repairman so if I could get some assistance in what to do I could try to fix the problem myself.

Thanks for the info. Needless to say, I will not be trying to fix it myself. Appreciate that you pointed out the hazards.

I apparently have the same problem with my 1994 model Sony KV20S10 Trinitron color TV. Only my TV make take "MUCH" longer then 5 minutes to come on. When it does come on the picture/sound quality are near perfect. "Keever" responded to check the 'cable-off' item in the menue since I'm on local antenna but that was done longgggg ago.

Has your problem been corrected at this time? Check my Bill Bones question.

Probably dry solder joints in the tuner section.

When the set warms up, the faulty joint/s make contact, then lose contact again when it cools down.

The tuner section is usually contained in a small metal box which in turn is mounted on the main board, where the antenna connects.

Standard-size soldering irons are usually way too large as the components are the surface mount type and require a SMC iron.

Using a standard soldering iron can easily short out other components. You may also need a circuit diagram, a multimeter and/or oscilloscope and obviously, a full understanding of how to use such test equipment.

Apart from this, there are extremely dangerous voltages that remain in TV's, long after they have been turned off (around 25 thousand volts). If you are not experienced in TV chassis repair, I strongly advise against attempting any DIY repairs for safety reasons alone.

Did you ever figure out how to fix this. We simply took our system and hooked it up to a different tv and it stopped. I personally think the problem is with the HDMI cable and wether the cable and the socket are connecting.

Channel Reception

It sounds like a defective tuner or a IF module as well. It may also be a defective capacitor(s) or cold solder joints inside the tuner circuitry. I woud suggest to use a VCR or a TV convertor connected to an Audio/video input to change channels instead of fixing it.
Good Luck.

Sony Trinitron TV Snow

I found out accidentally, is when I push the "demo" button, which shows many of the features on the TV. It'll run through the demo a few times, for as much as 10 minutes, then the TV will be fine. as you are getting fine picture on demo it indicates that your tv is perfectly ok. problem is out side of tv 1 check cable connection for loose or its socket is loose. 2 wire might be old or defective. 3 check tunning is done properly 4 if every thing is fine then check for tuner in your tv. good luck

Takes about 5 minutes for picture to appear... Then every one to two minutes the picture disappears. It comes back on for 1 - 2 minutes then repeats. When set if first turned on, the stereo/stand-by light (red) flashes on/off until just before picture first appears .if your tv is very old than it might be due to crt getting weak crt base loose loose contact in power supply thanks

TV Picture Goes Black

I had the same exact problem.
I removed the bulb and cleaned it. There is a small screen at the top of the bulb and it was covered with dust. Once it was cleaned I replaced the bulb and it solved the problem.
Thanks to those who posted the solutions
