The same problem i have posted earlier. Check if it beeps. If it does, check the IDE or SATA connection from motherboard to your HDD. plug it out and plug in again (HDD sata/ide connection). If it doesn't beep, then there's a problem with the motherboard. Check with your provider if it is still covered with warranty so that you cannot purchase motherboard again on the same specs.
Thanks...

( Dell xps m1530 laptop ) Monitor blank, powers up but screen won't come on.

It ISN'T the LCD screen. Since you diagnosed with an external VGA monitor, you now know the problem is the laptop.

(When you connect an external VGA monitor to a laptop, you are bypassing the Video Cable, and LCD screen. You are connected directly to the laptop )

The basic Windows files aren't being found. The boot files. This may mean a bad Harddrive.

Do you have the Restoration CD Disk? Laptop on insert it into the optical drive tray, close the tray.
When asked choose - Repair. (Non-Destructive Installation)

If a checkdisk is done, you have bad sectors on the harddrive.
There IS a special procedure in replacing a harddrive.

Power light on but screen is blank

Can you hook the computer up to an external monitor? If you have a desktop monitor that you can hook it too it could help determine if the LCD panel has failed.

When you turn on the computer, if you can see the harddrive light flickering/blinking then the computer is going thru the motions to boot up and it is just a visual issue. Purhaps your video card has failed. I know that HP / Compaq has had problems in the past with the Nvidia GPU seperating from the motherboard when they get too hot and the screen will go blank.

Try to hook to a external monitor and let me know your prognosis.

The power is on but there's no display and the hard disk light is off

Is it absolutly nothing displaying on the screen when you are starting up your system, and just some lights coming from either the power/harddrive/battery status light? Can you hear the fan power on? If you do get something on your display, but then a blank screen after the post up screen, then your harddrive bad. If not... then, Alright let see, start out by connecting your power cord to the laptop while the battery is on to see if you get a battery chraging status indicator, if you do try to power the netbook and see if any thing works. If you still get a blank screen, then use the external vga port to a external monitor or something to see if you get any display, but I doubt it could be your screen, if you ain't hearing the windows welcome sound (if you are using windows) when it loads, unless you created a user password on your welcome screen prior to this incident. After that, if nothing works, take your battery out and power supply, press on the on button for about 30sec or so to see if it can clear the bios... sometime this will load the default value to the bios and it could work. If nothing happens, then it could be your rams. Take out the service port panel on the back, if you there are two sticks of rams in the ram bank, remove one and out and just try using one and power your laptop on to see if you get anything or do a vise versa to the other ram. If it works, you probraly have a bad ram. If not, then yeah we can say, it's your motherboard, either a currupt vga chipset, cpu, or simply the motherboard itself. If this is the case, I would reccommend you to sell for parts on ebay, craiglist and get a new one instead of trying to repair it. You can still take your hard drive and copy the files to another drive like your desktop computer.

Hi,
I would check your power supply with a meter to see if that's the problem. If it checks out ok then it's probably the mobo. In rare instances when a power supply goes it takes the mobo with it.
Best of luck...Hank

Screen does not turn on but green light is on.

Green light indicates the monitor is getting power. Nothing coming up on the screen indicates, No Signal.

No signal from the computer. This means the computer itself isn't working.

A bad power supply in the computer can cause this. A bad power supply is the leading cause of desktop computer failure. It is replaceable, and can be done by the owner relatively easy.

You may have a computer tower that the Power light comes on, you hear fan/s spinning, (Including the Power Supply fan), and it sounds like the harddrive is running.

ALL the lights in your computer use less than 1 Watt.
EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.
A harddrive sitting there spinning in an endless loop, consumes about 2 to 3 Watts.

A Processor uses 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is.

A weak Power Supply will have enough power for lights, fans, and that harddrive sitting there spinning.
It won't have enough power to turn on the Processor.

[No processor operating, then the harddrive sits there spinning in an endless loop, because there is no processor to find the boot sector]

For a test, connect your monitor to a know good computer. See if it works.
Now connect that other monitor to your computer.

Power up IMac but screen blank, fan on, light on but no response

I have one doing exactly this at the moment. It had gone to sleep and the fans were going like crazy. I think it is a Motherboard failure (it happened with many G5 iMacs), this one has been replaced once already, and I can't actually get it to install anything. I'm taking it apart tomorrow to see what I can find inside. If I fond anything I'll let you know.

Screen wont come on.

first pull out the ram and harddrive one by one and reload the laptop should give you an error code if the computer is reading for those items also try pressing F1 at startup when it goes blank have one at the moment that has that problem and if the fans shut of the hard drive might not be no good......

Iam using windows xp sp-2 ,

Faster way: Re install your Microsoft Windows.

Slower way: Try to work around by pressing F8 during booting process and choose "Boot in Safe Mode". Locate the problem that could be caused by hardware driver such as VGA etc.

Another possibilities:

It might be not your windows, but your hardware. Could be the hard Disk or the computer it self.

To define it you should provide us some more information, such as:

  1. Did the power supply turn up?
  2. Did the PRE BOOT (BIOS initialization) appeared in the first place before "the blank screen" appeared
  3. etc
Looking forward to hearing again from you...
