289 2 barrel with new fuel pump. gas will not stay in the fuel line after the car sits even for a few minutes. Has to be pumped back up into the filter and carb. by cranking at least 20 times.

    Fuel in the float bowl does allow the car to run a few seconds after it starts. The fuel pump was replaced because it was damaged in an accident. I can see that the fuel has drained down from the carb. because the fuel line has a clear inline fuel filter. It starts first crank but stalls when the float bowl empties then it has to crank at least 20 times to pump fuel back up to the carb. It runs fine but after being shut off for even 30 minutes the fuel drains back down.

Replace the check(needle) valve at the carburetor. That's the only thing that keeps fuel From draining back to the fuel pump.Check the float level.

Even if that was true, the car would run for 20 seconds without any fuel in the line, because the carb would have gas in the bowl. Why was the fuel pump replaced? How do you know theres no gas in the line? The check valve in the fuel pump should keep fuel from going backwards into the tank. The carb should hold gas, if not, find out why.

Why does my carburetor only run when I prime it?
you will have to remove the mechanical pump and prime it before it will pump fuel. Quickest way if you can put your hands in fuel is to put the pump in a bucket of fuel and work the lever. It will only take a few pumps of the lever to get fuel into the pump. If fuel affects your skin then attach a hose to the inlet side and work the lever. Then when you refit the pump ,make sure that the lever is on the correct side of the cam. After that you will have fuel in the carby fairly quickly (30 secs of cranking or less)

Will start but wont stay running
No the missing O2 sensors would not keep it from running. The missing exhaust pipes might not help matters. No exhaust system would cause a lack of back pressure.
I would want to know what base fuel pressure is with a gauge before and after cranking. Your thought about bad gas is legit, today's gasoline is only good for about 2 or 3 months before it starts gelling up.
Did you replace the inline filter the last time you put the new pump in ? And are you sure the pump is getting power after the key is released?

your fuel pump is almost out ...go get a new pump and save this headache ,,trust me I learn new things daily as a mechanic with all of the new things they come up with also run 1 can of sea foam to 1 tank of gas ,,your tail pipe will smoke for about 30 minutes ,,it is blowing carbons out of your engine and you will get super gas mileage

1977 Porsche 924 New fuel pump and filter no gas just air.
I would check the fuel lines where they attach to the sending unit. The rubber inside of the nylon weave is probably rotten and sucking air instead of pulling the fuel up and out of the tank.

This should be enough to do the job. If the pump is cutting out check your fuel pump relay in the power distribution box under the hood and the ignition switch for a short as well as the connections on the bump for proper installation. The pump should stay cycling to maintain pressure on the line at the proper level. You also want to check the fuel pressure sensor to make sure it is working properly.

As with most fuel injected vehicles. Most fuel pumps are in the tank, I am going by this generally acccepted design. The fuel is pumped into the fuel rail, by a fuel regulator valve, most of the time, kinda looks like a little space ship, some electrically controlled, some by vacuum. If you find it, trace the wire for a short, or vacuum hose, for a leak,blockage. Next if all that is in order, check the retyurn line from the fuel rail, back to the tank. Unused gas is recycled back to the tank. As only minimal fuel is returned back to the tank, sometimes the lines,steel, or plastic, are put in places, where thay can easily be crushed,(blocked) by jacking the car up. Did this issue begin to occur after the vehicle was on a lift??? Where did you place your jack, to get to the fuel pump??? Did anything collapse/crush at that time???

Vehicle starts then stalls out like it is out of gas then will not start. let sit for awhile then starts and runs for a minute or so then stalls out again.
Sounds as if your fuel pump is not operating correctly are has gone on the fritz. Of course it also could be your fuel line filter has been clogged up to the point of not letting the fuel flow. I changed two fuel pumps in a ford until I checked the fuel line filter and found it clogged. What it would do was to start and run at low speeds for a few miles, but when I accelerated it would force the gunk in the fuel line filter up to the end and block the gas flow. When I would let it sit for about ten minutes, gravity took over and settled the gunk in the lower part of the filter and fuel would flow as long as the fuel pressure was low.

Check the fuel filter first, then the fuel pump. I think that all of the fuel pumps are now in the gas tank and is a dickens to replace.

Fuel pump and the sensor that detects the gas level are both inside the gas tank.
