Question about RCA RC5215P DVD Player

Open Question

Unit won't power up.

Tried to power up--no dice. Opened up unit to check for blown fuse, cold solder joints, etc. Fuse is good. Removed main board and was able to verify 170 VDC all the way the primary side of transformer T1400. No DC voltage measured across the secondary side of T1400. Tried unloading the supply to the tray motor, but still won't come up. Also tried disconnecting the ribbon from the disc tray, but still no joy. Checked all connections--all good. Unit still won't power up.

SOURCE: No Power

What is the cassis number to your set. RCA has to be diagnosed by the chassis as they have used different chassis depending on manufacturer. Should be a PTK number located on the back of your set.

SOURCE: Dead power supply.

Faulty power-supply symptoms:

The front panel display and buttons are completely nonfunctional and appear dead. The unit will do nothing more than display the following messages on the TV screen:

Interface error
(and or)
Interface error! Turn off the power

If a DVD or VHS tape was inserted prior to the error occurring, you won't be able to eject either from that point further. They'll remain stuck inside the unit until you've completed the repair detailed below.

Interface error! Turn off the power <--- explains how to completely restore your combo in less than 20 minutes by replacing a $1.59 part on the power-supply board. mikeadams110@yahoo.com

SOURCE: RCA DRC257N No Power

Had the same exact issue. RCA DRC257N was acting funny, frequently freezing up at HELLO screen, sometimes buttons would stop working during playback, requiring frequent unplugging to get back to working. Opened the case, pulled out the power board and noticed that capacitor C411 (1000uF 16V) was bulging out at top and bottom. Replaced with a $1.59 1000uF 35V capacitor from Radio Shack and all is back to good working order. Thanks.

Hi malinao,

Here are some basic steps that will help you fixing the problem.

I'm assuming that your unit is dead set without an standby LED light and your outlet is live.1.Power cord - check the cord it might be opened (no continuity). This is due to frequent bending, pulling. 2. Power switch - check for dry joints, open contact. 3.Check the internal fuse- sometimes the fuse fail because of the power surge, replacing with new one will cure the problem, If this is the case I would advice you to use surge protector/AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator). However if the fuse blew again this is an indication that you have a shorted parts in the power supply, you may visit the linkhttp://www.fixya.com/support/r8053361-fuse_keeps_blowing for more info. If no reaction and still the unit didn't power up then you have an open parts on the power supply.

4.If you see that the fuse is intact , don't attempt to touch anything because there some fatalcomponents stored electricity enough to hurt you with a simple mistake only. I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the power supply. If you want to repair it yourself make sure that you have necessary tools and test instrument. First check bad solder joints(re-solder all cold solder), leaky electrolytic capacitor(sometimes it has bulged at the top but not all, you better have a capacitor checker), open/shorted regulator transistor/IC(mounted in heat sink), open fusible resistor (caused by shorted regulator Transistor/IC), shorted zener diode.

You may also replace the power supply board for your convenient, it will not require any soldering, obtain the board from your local Sony Service Centers.

Also check if your unit is under warranty before opening the back panel, it will void the warranty. Avail it because the manufacturer of your unit will fix it for free or a little charge only.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using fixya.

I HAVE A HAMMON ORGAN T-524C VOLTS AC 120, HERTZ 60 AMPS 20. FIRST THE SOUND STOPPED COMING OUT AND NOW THE MOTOR HAS STOPPED RUNING. WHAT CAUSED THIS? WHAT CAN I DO? wHERE CAN I GET PARTS?i IS IT...

it could be a capacitor issue, if you will be able to open the organ from behind, look for a piece that looks like the picture below and check if it is almost bursting or ballooning,( like when you put some Coke in a plastic bottle then shake it until the bottle almost pops), if you see them like that, that means they may be damaged and must be replaced. check the catalog here

Unit has no power.

Check the power supply module main AC fuse, it should be labeled with F? on the board, DC filter caps, burnt parts, cold solder joints, etc.

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools, electronics knowledge, and know safety precaution then please read on:

Pioneer sd-643hd5 fuse issue

The fuses may not be your problem--I have fixed several of these---The large power board is on the right side as you look from the back?

Lots of these sets develop bad solder connections on that board--several sites on the internet offer to have you remove and send them the board to resolder--this set used lead free solder and after some years has problems--a few I have opened had clearly broken solder joints--I usually in this case remove the board(mark all the many plugs and make a diagram) and solder almost all of it by hand----usually fixes this kind of trouble.

I do this here for free so if this information was helpful give me a vote here....I am here to help people.

Timer on Airconditioner works, however, nothing else works. It has electricity, but will not turn on - just the timer.

the fuse is located on the main board of the ac.fot that the ac upper unit has to be opened.its like a mini tube light.and about 1 inch in lenght .and made of thin glass.
as per my knowledge it can be possible that fuse is blown out,but also possible that the main board it self has a short circuit in the components located on it.because if the fuse is blown out ,then even the timer will not start.but you mentioned that timer is working.still you check the fuse if its proper then its a main boaRD FAULT.mostly it will be a reparing /soldering job.the cost will be negligible.if you are not familiar with soldering a lovcal electronics repair tech is more then enough.
please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.thanks.

Removed and replaced internal fuse - unit is now dead

Hi

The chances are that you bridged the printed track with a splash of solder when you replaced the regulator. A short circuit like this will cause the fuse to blow. You can get replacement 20mm slow blow 2amp fuses quite easily. But before you fit a new one, pull the board out again and have a very careful look under a magnifying glass at your solder joints. Get a small stiff bristle brush and carefully brush across the joints in case there is a tiny ball of solder across two points. When you reassemble the unit, ensure that the ribbon connectors are central and fully pushed into the sockets. I'm sure you can recover your DMR E55 reasonably easily. Best wishes

My sons wharfedale wpc 286 portable cd/radio experienced a complete power failure. Checked the fuse in the plug and it was ok. Is their an internal fuse or could it be loose connection internally?

Cold solder issues - each component is soldered into small holes on the printed circuit board which in turn connects said component to the other components. Due to time, heat, use, some solder joints would be cracked or loose. It is possible that the cold solder is still minimally connected (hanging by a thread). When the receiver turns on heat would be generated which would be sufficient to further loosen up the solder joint to the point it no longer provides electrical contact. Jarring the unit creates movement inside enough to re establish the contact, sometime good enough sometimes not enough.

Again, since the unit still operates (sometimes) then it is highly probable that there are no defective components. As you have surmised, it is possibly a loose connection, solder joints are "connections" except that molten soldering lead is used to attach/connect the component to the board, "loose connection" in this sense is equal to "cold solder".

Again on the assumption of no defective parts, then seeking a more experienced buddy for the soldering might be to your advantage. This is of course in addition to the possible electrical hazards when repairing....If i have helped, please click fixya. It is the only way i get paid for my work...

Good luck:

if you are sure power is going to unit,There is a strong possiblity you have a burnt trace , main harness solder joints bad or shorted reverse polarity protect diode on main board .Also make sure you have power to both MAIN power (RED) and STANDBY POWER ( YELLOW) AND of course a good ground on radio chassis..

No power to unit

Remove the power plug and reopen the unit. Usually the socket will be soldered directly to a Printed Circuit Board. Look in the underside (where the solder joints are and you'll see the joints associated with the power socket. One of these is either a bad connection or the solder pad has lifted and broken the track on the PC board. If it's the solder pads give them a workout with a soldering iron if it still plays up scrape the protective lacquer of the PCboard Tracks and resolder them to the socket's solder joints. This should solve your problem. The best way to spot a bad connection is to reinsert your plug (making sure the other end isn't plugged into the wall socket) and lever the plug up, down, left and right. If there's anything faulty you'll see it. The solder joints will move very slightly and if the track is fractured you should spot that too. One other tip is that there is a switch built into the socket which will disable the battery power when you plug the unit into power. I have seen a few of these switches go bad but the chance of that is extremely small. I'd put my money on the socket's solder joints. BMW
