If I understood right ..this is an internal dual writer that you added to your laptop after the xp was already installed... it is compatible ..but I believe that it is not installed..proper with its driver ...the xp has the driver built in ...and if you go to device manager ..by right click on my computer /properties/ hardware /device manager ..you should find the writer with a yellow park ..this means it has no driver ... first try to right click on it ..and update driver ...if this do not work ...you have to go to go to add new hardware ...let it search for device ..than choose not to search auto ..but serch it from a list ...and it will show you a list with cd /dvd's drivers that are already on xp ...try them one by one ..usually had to be a no4 something ...
even if it has a CD that came with it ..maybe the driver is for vista ..or your computer is on 64 and the driver is not compatible ...
if I were you ...I just insert the windows xp disk ...boot from it ...and reinstall teh os...(save all data in the other partitions first ) and only reinstall the windows in C ...it should take it auto...
this should make it at least read the disks ...because the xp do not have a dvd writer built in ...for to write ..you have to use a burning software like iso burn ...or Nero ...and so on ...which one you are familiar with ....Ill recommend Nero 7 for xp
by the way ...it is an ide /eide bus and to work ...to install xp ...you have to boot directly from the disk ..I hope you know how......go to bios ...select boot priority from the disk ...save with f10...and restart...it will take the dvd drive even without driver to boot from ...

What error are you getting, also were the correct drivers loaded for the DVD drive? If so was it working properly or has it never worked?

Either the lens is dirty or it has gone bad. try a cd cleaner first, the you can also reload the drivers to see if that helps

My DVD rw (DW-Q58A) in VGN FS42w won't read CD (both music and data) although it plays DVD video and recognizes blank DVD-R.

It happens if the lens becomes weak. I advice you get an external DVD-RW.
I hope you find this solution is helpful.

Maybe i need driver hp workstation z800 windows

Windows XP and Vista have built-in support for reading/writing CD/DVD disks -- you don't need a "device-driver" at all.

If you want FREE software to make it easier to collect files and burn CD/DVD disks, access http://www.MajorGeeks.com
and download 'AShampoo Burning 6', and install it.

DVD Drive problem

Hello,

There maybe a problem with a ribbon like cable that connects your drive to the mainboard. In order to be sure if there is a hardware problem, try to boot your laptop using a bootable cd. If this works and you can read files from the cd then it maybe a windows instalation or driver problem. My best guess is however a hardware problem related to that specific cable or connector. You should try to check these if possible. If your laptop is still in warranty send it to a service center for in-warranty repairs. Otherwise I may help you on how to dissasemble it or how to check that connector.

Hope it helps,
Bogdan

Teac DW-224E-c - cannot burn DVD's

The answer is what you profess. The drive can burn CD's, read CD's and also read DVD's. Everytime I try and burn a DVD I have an unrecognized drive and the properties always show no disk: The drive burns CD's ie;music, but cannot burn DVD it can only read DVD like you say!
